Single Mom & Newcomer Richelene Achieves Her Dental Assistant Dream

Single Mom & Newcomer Richelene Achieves Her Dental Assistant Dream

At Anderson College, we are constantly amazed by the courage of our students, faculty, and staff. In December 2021 we ran a “My Courageous Moment” story-gathering campaign to celebrate our students, their strength, the moments that have defined their lives and the people who have motivated them to overcome and succeed.

In sharing our stories, we realize we are not alone and are often inspired to recognize, or to find, our own extraordinary courage. We hope the following story moves you, as it has our Anderson family.

Starting a New Journey in Canada

I’m a single mother who arrived in Toronto for a better career. Here in Canada, you need to go to school and get your diploma/certificate for the job you want, and of course the job you love. I chose the intra oral dental assisting field because I am one of those who doesn’t have any knowledge about how to take good care of my teeth. I wanted to help all the patients out there and make them understand how to keep their teeth healthy. Our teeth are one of the most important parts of our body and life, so that we can enjoy every food that we eat.

Overcoming Challenges During the Pandemic

“What I learned from all of this was, that whatever circumstances you encounter just believe in yourself.”
My years of 2020/21 weren’t that good (or certainly for many of us) because of the pandemic. One of the reasons that gave me a hard time was because I tested positive for COVID-19. I had planned everything and set future goals for me and for my daughter. I planned to finish my school by March. But all of a sudden COVID-19 gets you and you’re absolutely left behind with all your delayed plans. I questioned everything and especially why this was this happening to me? Many of my friends comforted me saying that life must go on, whatever happens don’t let anything ruin your plans, always keep moving forward.

What I learned from all of this was, that whatever circumstances you encounter just believe in yourself. I may have cried every day during that time but it’s okay because I knew someday, I would taste the fruit and success of my efforts. Sometimes delayed plans are still good plans for you.

Graduation and New Beginnings

“And this is it! I am officially one of the graduate students of Anderson College.”
I don’t have any regrets about what happened to me because I met new classmates (Anderson College let me have my second chance and return to my program without having to pay!). I’ve made good memories while at Anderson College. And this is it! I am officially one of the graduate students of Anderson College. A special mention of all the staff who are behind every student’s success. Thank you for helping us throughout our upside-down journey and for helping us reach our goals. More power to Anderson College!

Words of Encouragement for Future Students

You may face tons of problem today but always remember the reason why you started out. Delayed situations don’t mean you can’t achieve. Sometimes things happen another way to prepare you for what more you can be. Don’t lose hope. Life must go on.
