Kathleen’s Courageous Journey: From Immigrant Mom to Dental Assistant Student at Anderson College
As part of our My2020 Story Campaign, students from across Anderson College shared their journeys of resilience. Many, like Kathleen, are pursuing careers through our in-demand Dental Assistant Program in Canada, designed to help students build rewarding futures in healthcare.
As we all have, Anderson College students have faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In an attempt to focus on the triumphs and celebrate the courage and tenacity of our community, we launched a My2020 Story Campaign. Students were asked a few poignant questions to spark the sharing of their experiences and insights. The response was overwhelming and, in the process, we have been blown away by their authentic sharing and inspired by the powerful lessons they have learned. We are grateful to all those who contributed and are richer for having you in our Anderson family.
Here is one such story, for you …
Despite the incredible disasters and everything the world faced with COVID-19, I believe the experience of 2020 has also provided all of us with a break and was an eye-opener as to what is really important – family.
Immigrating to Canada is not an easy thing. There are lots of what ifs and hows. I knew that there would be a lot of changes, changes that would help me grow into a better person. I left a lot of loved ones back home – my mom, sister, nephews and nieces – but this motivated me to move forward in my life here in Canada where I knew there could be plenty of opportunities for me.
I came to Canada just 3 months before COVID-19 began. Sad isn’t it? I remember that our plans to explore Canada were cancelled because of the lockdown in mid-March. I remember that we celebrated my daughter’s first birthday on March 6, just one week after the lockdown began. I also remember that my very first job was cancelled during the first week. I was going to be a receptionist and waited a few weeks to get my shifts. Only 3 weeks later, the business was closed because it was not permitted to operate due to the COVID-19 restrictions and regulations. But these things didn’t stop me from finding other work, and yes, I found a new job as a Bakery Clerk at a grocery store.
“There was a time when I first started going to school, I could not even afford to buy food or a pair of new shoes, but it didn’t stop me from learning.”
At first, it was scary to go to work as an essential worker, especially because I worried about the health of my one-year-old daughter. My husband even objected to me working there, but I insisted. My perspective changed; working during COVID helped me to earn a little extra for my family. I like helping my family, those who are here in Canada and those I left at home in the Philippines. They’re my inspiration to do more and dream more. They’re my motivation to keep going. I am from a proud family; I want them to experience things when we are financially stable.
Throughout my life I experienced financial struggle. Years ago, there was a time when I first started going to school, I could not even afford to buy food or a pair of new shoes, but it didn’t stop me from learning. I was awarded Second Honors during the first year in my high school. There was also a time when I could not afford to go to an English Essay Contest. Luckily one of my aunties supported me financially so I could represent my school in that Provincial Contest. These are some of the unforgettable moments in my life – it’s really true that an empty pocket and a hungry stomach offer the best lessons in life. My experience motivated me to focus on doing better every single day.
“I am thankful for those staff who helped me to prepare my papers and answered my unending questions.”
Fast forward to 2020, I found an opportunity to study at Anderson College. I took the Dental Assisting program. I am thankful for those staff who helped me to prepare my papers and who answered my unending questions. I salute you all! Going to my classes everyday was not always easy as I was taking care of my daughter at the same time, but I did not waste this opportunity. I learned and enhanced my skills so that I could be one of the best Certified Dental Assistants of my generation! That was my goal and still is today.

I hope that, in still dealing with this pandemic, within the challenges of our lives that we also find the inspiration we need to keep going. Don’t forget to see the positive side of everything, as each day molds us into a better version of ourselves.
We welcomed 2020 with fireworks and greetings. So, like every year, one of the first thoughts is about our plans for the coming year. Plans with dreams, imagining how we want to spend the whole year. But 2020 tested us, the whole world faced a lot of tragedies, either man-made or natural disasters, and of course the beginning of COVID-19.
“Take all the great opportunities you’re given in life and enjoy them.”
These are the things that greatly impacted our lives during 2020. Many lost their jobs, businesses and even their lives. It was unexpected. While these disastrous events happened around me, I came to realize that everything could be destroyed or disappear even if you took great care of your assets. We might think money can save us, at least we can pay for our hospital bills. But no, it really depends on the situation.
As long as you are alive, live the best that you can. Love your family and take good care of your health, these are the only two things that will never leave you. Smile, for it will brighten another person’s day. Take all the great opportunities you’re given in life and enjoy them. And laugh, for it will make all the negativities in the world disappear.
