If you’ve always been intrigued by the law, are passionate about research and engaging in and supporting justice in the world, then a paralegal career could be the perfect fit for you. The educational path is certainly less intensive than the one to become a lawyer, and the thrill of working cases and facilitating various legal processes in support, is just as rewarding.
Whether you’re currently enrolled in a paralegal program, or paralegal courses or already have your paralegal certificate, you can glean from understanding the expectations beyond the job descriptions you find posted. Blending technical know-how with honing skills that drive that competitive advantage in the field, here’s what you need to know …
10 Duties and Skills to Master to Excel as a Paralegal
1. Research, Research, Research
You need to be a wizard in this area. Your ability to sift through legal articles, study case law, statutes and regulations, to provide critical details to the legal team is a skill you need, second to none. The details you deliver, provide the foundation for reports and summaries for attorneys to present, and can be the difference between a win and a loss.
2. Manage Cases with Verve
From organizing documents to tracking essential details and deadlines, you will oversee a case through the entire lifecycle from first client meeting to case resolution. Each vital piece of information must be at your fingertips to deliver up details on at a moment’s notice.
3. Communicate Like a Leader
Although you are not officially the lawyer, your ability to communicate clearly, concisely, professionally, indicates that you are at a leadership level in your skills. From initial interviews, gathering essential details and updating on progress, you always bring your empathetic, informed, A-game to every encounter with your team and those you serve.
4. Interface with Counsel and Attend Court with Presence
You may not be the lead lawyer, but every interaction is a representative of the professional and firm you work for. You carry it off with poise and ease. You correspond with, and prepare responses, with a lawyer’s guidance. You accompany lawyers to court and aid in case management and provide on-site support. You are a powerful and purposeful presence, and your input is invaluable.
5. Learn with an Eye on Specialization
As you explore and engage in your first months and years as a paralegal, you’ll be on the lookout for what stirs your interest. From corporate, real estate, and criminal law to family and intellectual property law, there is much to choose from to as you hone your skills and set your sights on where your talents and passions are best placed.
6. Note the Investment in the Experience
Each case is unique. You will have a purposeful role in the details and your engagement with the lawyers and the clients, will see your mind and even your heart invested in the outcome. Recognize this to be true and revel in the amazing feeling that being part of a team brings. And then realize that you will need to learn to win with humility and lose with grace, and that you will support others through the ebbs and flows of each case.
7. Be Prepared to Focus Your Case Support
While small firms may have you doing it all, in larger firms you may work with a team of paralegals and each one of you may focus your attention on one key aspect of the process. Whether you’re asked to focus only on client meetings or only collecting and organizing evidence for hearing – whatever the task – just be ready to roll with what’s needed.
8. Remember It’s All in the Details
Organization and attention to details cannot be overstated. If you’ve got a thing for systems, keeping info at the ready, tracking what everyone on the team needs to know and when, so that you can remind, guide, support and drive results, then you’ll be indispensable to all you work with.
9. Find the Balance Between Empathy and Advising
If you are passionate about your work, of course you will become invested in those you’re assisting. You want to be an exceptional listener and demonstrate empathy as you move through each case, but at all times you must keep your eye on professionalism and deliver the advice and support that is in keeping with what is best for the client and best for the firm. When in doubt, ask the advice of leaders and lawyers on your team.
10. Let Your Moral Compass Guide, Always
Sometime teams are made up of those legal professionals working to make the world a better place, those fighting for justice. And sometimes there’s a gray area and other motives at play. But if you are to make it in this profession long term, and feel proud of yourself while doing so, you must cultivate a strong moral fibre and do what is ethically responsible and right, at all times.
For those seeking an opportunity to support and make a difference in the lives of others, those inspired to help clients as they face challenges, and guide them through the legal process, then this is an ideal career for you.
