You’ve got your eye on training to become a paralegal. You’re passionate about the law and keen to launch a career that’s both challenging and enriching, but as with heading into the jungle, being prepared is a must, and can mean you not only survive but thrive in a competitive field.
Your classes for paralegal at a leading-edge college and becoming a paralegal in Ontario will offer the technical knowledge and should give you the opportunity to test it with a practicum, but heading out into the world with that shiny new diploma can be an awakening. Here’s what you need to know to soar right out of the gate. And if you’re still exploring paralegal studies in Ontario, this will help you understand precisely what’s ahead for you.
8 Essential Insights You Need to Know Before Launching Your Paralegal Career
1. You Need Not Be a Master of All Things
You may feel the pressure after graduating to suddenly be an expert in all areas of the law to be effective. In an ever-evolving field, that is unrealistic; so, cut yourself some slack. However, being an expert researcher is a must. One of the elements you should have nailed during your time in a paralegal training program, is tapping resources with ease and efficiency. Hone in on areas that are of interest to you, apply your deductive reasoning and stellar research skills and you will soon build a reputation for being a resource your clients can count on.
2. Immediate Specialization Isn’t Required
You’ll find your niche when you’re ready; in the beginning, it’s about exploring your options and passions and recognizing that your paralegal career can evolve just as you do, throughout your lifetime. During your training, pick the minds and experience of your expert instructors; use your practicum as a time to test the waters of what thrills you. Do not succumb to any pressure to choose; you will not be left behind and you will find your way in precisely the right time. Test the waters; trust your instincts.
3. Your Career Will Not Always Thrill You
Oh sure you’ll be all abuzz after graduation, but when the honeymoon phase is over, like with every other career option, you will not always be starry eyed. There is grunt work to be done; there will be days that will vex you and people who will drive you to distraction. This is all part of the test; it’s life and you’ll need to take the lows with the highs. The beauty about a career that deals with the law, for someone who is dazzled by it? You will always find your way back to the love you first knew and your joy at serving others as they navigate their way through the legal process will return again and again and get better with time.
4. Your Paralegal Role May Seem Like That of a Legal Assistant, Leverage It
The tasks of a paralegal can mirror what is expected of a legal assistant. And right after graduation you may not land a job working in the role of a paralegal. Often employers looking for that lead role are expecting someone with a ton of experience and insight to offer. You’ll get there. But working your way up, leveraging your entry position doing the work of a legal assistant will soon allow you to shine, develop contacts in the industry and, as a certified paralegal, your expertise will lead you to the position you dream of. Promise.
5. Be Realistic About the Opportunities and Challenges of Being a Solopreneur
Yes, there are near-limitless perks in being your own boss, setting your own schedule and niche, working with clients in situations that fascinate you, but recognize the learning curve so you can plan for it. Launching out on your own is awesome but you need to be realistic with the timeframe on success, and what that even means for you. Starting from scratch is an investment in yourself, know that financial stability and abundance take time. You need to build a client base, to get your feet wet in a number of legal situations to gain experience and you need to build a reputation for specialization in areas that people require. Mapping out a solid business plan can make all the difference in your expectations, hitting your stride faster, and stepping into the world of solopreneur-ship with ease and verve.
6. The Box is Not Your Friend
While there are elements of paralegal work that are customary, traditional, and required, and you will provide those tasks for clients, you don’t want to stop there. Keep your eyes and options open. You may enjoy legal research, drafting and being in court, but survey the creative bits of your career. You could add legal writer, blogger to your job, be a legal technology specialist and so much more. Your stellar skills are transferable and your classification as a paralegal will open myriad doors – you just have to keep your finger on the pulse of what, and where, they are.
7. The Most Curious Professional Wins
Never stop asking questions, ever. In the beginning this will come naturally, will be a must as you expand your knowledge and glean from those with some years under their belts. But no matter how much knowledge or expertise you gain, this inquisitive nature of yours should continue to be insatiable. A curious nature and questioning mind will empower you to draw the best from others, add to your repertoire of knowledge and to perpetually evolve in your career and in your best life.
8. Never Underestimate the Value of Certification
Certification is essential. Enrolling in a diploma program accredited by the Law Society of Ontario, taught by licensed paralegals who provide you with the substantive law training required to successfully enter the Law Society of Ontario’s paralegal licensing process, is your competitive advantage.
Anderson College’s paralegal programs span 48 to 50 weeks and include traditional lecture and seminar courses, as well as field trips to local courts and tribunals. There are also several mock hearings and presentations throughout the program. Practicum placement will ensure you graduate with exposure to the profession, and the requisite hours to qualify for the licensing process.
To provide legal services in Ontario a person must be licensed by the Law Society of Ontario.
And to obtain a license, a person must graduate from a program accredited by the Law Society of Ontario, pass a licensing examination and be of good character.
