From Self-Advocacy to Golden Gavel Award Winner: Adrianne’s Paralegal Program Journey

Adrianne’s path into law did not begin in a classroom. It began much earlier, shaped by lived experience, by environments where she had to find her voice, and by moments that required her to advocate for herself long before she ever considered doing so professionally.
Now a student in Anderson College’s paralegal program and a recipient of the Golden Gavel Award, her journey reflects something deeper than academic success. It is grounded in resilience, strengthened through challenge, and guided by a clear and evolving sense of purpose.
Her story is not about a single turning point. It is about recognition, growth, and stepping into a role that aligns with who she has always been.
Building a Meaningful Career Through a Paralegal Program
A Foundation Rooted In Self-Advocacy
Adrianne’s connection to law is deeply personal. Advocacy was not something she discovered later in life. It was something she developed out of necessity.
“Being a visible minority, I had to learn to advocate for myself from a very young age, throughout every aspect of my life, from elementary school to high school to university and college. I have been in different post-secondary institutions where I had to advocate for myself in each one, and throughout my employment.
“Advocating for myself became a survival tactic, and that led me to want to help others, advocate for others, and support people in navigating complex situations. That is what ultimately drew me toward a legal career.”
That lived experience did more than influence her path. It clearly defined it.
Discovering A New Path Into Law
For Adrianne, the idea of working in law shifted when she realized that becoming a lawyer was not the only way to enter the field.
“I have met a few people who graduated from Anderson’s Paralegal program over the years, and I know a couple who now practice and have their own firms as paralegals. It opened my eyes to the fact that you don’t have to be a lawyer to practice law, and I didn’t know that before. That realization is what pushed me in the direction of Anderson College.”
That realization reframed what was possible. It turned curiosity into direction.
“I’ve met people who have taken paralegal programs at other colleges, and I noticed a difference. The only people I know who are practicing and running their own firms are graduates of Anderson. That showed me there is a supportive environment and a strong curriculum here, and it gave me confidence in choosing this college.”
Challenge, Growth, And Academic Transformation
Once inside the program, Adrianne quickly realized that this was not passive learning. It required engagement, effort, and a willingness to think differently.
“My experience has been very informative and challenging, but in a good way. I am being pushed to think outside the box, and I find the courses very thought-provoking. Through the courses I’ve taken and completed, the information has helped develop my analytical thinking skills and encouraged me to dig deeper, answer questions, and analyze scenarios.”
Her growth was not abstract. It was tied directly to practical skill development.
“The computer course opened my eyes to how valuable technology is and how it can simplify tasks such as creating spreadsheets, drafting memorandums, and completing work I had become somewhat unfamiliar with after being out of academia for some time.
“We’re learning how to write legal memorandums and complete intake forms. Without this course, I would not have known where to start or how to properly structure these documents. If someone asked me to write a memo with footnotes, I would not have known where to begin. Computer Applications has been incredibly helpful in building those skills.”
This reflects the strength of structured, applied paralegal training courses, where students are not only introduced to concepts, but taught how to execute them with confidence.
“I’m used to writing essays, so learning formal document structure has been a significant shift. Setting up a document is more detailed than I expected, but I’ve also learned how manageable it becomes once you understand the process.”
Support That Drives Confidence
A defining part of Adrianne’s experience has been the level of instructor support available to her throughout the program.
“I was in regular contact with Mr. Patrick Keep, our Computer Applications instructor. I often felt unsure of myself, but he consistently showed me that I was on the right track. He was always available, whether during class or afterward, and that level of support made a significant difference in my confidence.
“With Ms. Sudine Riley, when I was having difficulty with comprehension, I found it incredibly helpful to approach her after class and work through the material until I fully understood it. Her patience has been instrumental in getting me to this point. Similarly, with Mr. Riyad Bacchus, being able to ask questions repeatedly until I understood the material was a key part of my learning experience.
“I also found that the smaller classroom dynamic made a meaningful impact. It is much more conducive to learning, especially in a condensed program where the volume of information is intense. I am grateful that my instructors were consistently present and provided the guidance I needed throughout the program.”
Learning Through Connection And Collaboration
Alongside the academic demands of the program, Adrianne found that connection and shared learning became an essential part of her experience.
“I have a study group, so it makes a group of three, and sometimes four, and that teamwork and that small, little micro-group of knowledge that I’ve created for myself has really been a very comforting experience, but also another evolution into who I am becoming professionally.
“We’re able to bounce ideas off each other and offer different perspectives. One of my peers gives me a different point of view and shows me to look at scenarios and information from a vantage point that I simply don’t have.
“Building this small network of friends where we study together has helped me immensely with my academia, but also my comprehension.”
The Moment Everything Clicked
Amid the pace and intensity of the program, there came a moment that brought everything into focus in a way she hadn’t anticipated.
“The coursework and details started to connect with what I’d learned in a previous course. Things really started coming together; I felt like I understood where I was and that I truly belonged. I was comfortable and it was an eye-opener for me to recognize that doing research and digging for answers is where I need to be.
“But the moment everything really clicked was when I received the Golden Gavel Award.”
Recognition Through The Golden Gavel Award
What began as personal growth and quiet consistency was soon recognized at a level that reflected not just her progress, but the standard she had set through her work.
“I was completely shocked because, up until that moment, I had never even heard of the Golden Gavel Award. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I’m still learning about it and coming to grasp how great it is. It’s been very rewarding and exciting.
“I was certainly not expecting it, nor am I used to being recognized for my hard work and dedication to a program, and to my own personal goals. The recognition really mattered, honestly, it has been so humbling. Re-entering a professional program to completion, building a new network of like-minded individuals, my hard work, commitment, and growth—receiving this award validates all of those things and I’m just so grateful.
“I believe my consistency, my professionalism, but first and foremost my integrity—my integrity in this course—I think, has taken me this far. My conduct and strong work ethic, I believe that is what may have spotlighted me.”
Expanding Possibilities And Future Direction
Rather than marking an endpoint, this recognition expanded Adrianne’s sense of what was possible and the direction she could take moving forward.
“This whole experience has been incredibly meaningful; it inspires me to set even higher standards because I didn’t realize this was a standard I could meet. Now I feel motivated to push higher and set bigger goals and aspirations. This award has taught me that I can dream bigger, that I can want more, and that it’s okay to want more in the pursuit of justice.
“I still have quite a lot of time ahead of me, and I want to build a strong foundation of understanding. It’s a very intense course load, and while things are condensed, it’s teaching me to manage my time more effectively. I want to master my time management skills but also build strong connections with some of my peers, because we’re all going to go out into the world. We might be adversaries or we might be partners.
Adrianne’s options and dreams are continuing to expand.
“I had started out thinking that I just wanted to work for a big firm, and then I considered starting my own firm. But now, as I’m learning, I see that there are many different options. I’m also thinking about what it would be like to pursue the role of a justice of the peace after writing my P1, and I find that very interesting. We still have more courses ahead, including immigration and landlord and tenant, so there is still so much to learn. I’m trying to stay open and keep track of the areas I find most interesting. I really enjoyed contracts and torts, and I may want to pursue contract law, but I am still exploring.
“When I came into this program, I thought paralegals only dealt with parking tickets under the Highway Traffic Act. I had no idea you could work in so many different areas of law, justice, and advocacy. Now I see that there are far more possibilities within this field than I originally understood, and I am eager to continue discovering where I want to focus.”
Advice Rooted In Experience
Grounded in both challenge and growth, Adrianne offers advice shaped by experience, reflection, and a clear understanding of what it takes to succeed.
“Integrity is the most important thing to maintain from day one through to completion. Stay dedicated, remain professional in everything you do, and continue striving to improve. Be open to constructive criticism and learn from your mistakes. Stay humble, but always work toward growth. When you don’t understand something, take the time to investigate and push yourself until you do.
“I found the computer course to be the most challenging, but also the most valuable. I’m not naturally tech-savvy, and at times it felt discouraging. However, working through those challenges became an important part of my learning. Keep pushing forward. Don’t give up. Believe in yourself and continue striving to improve. Being open to feedback is essential, because that is where real learning happens.
“There are also opportunities within the program that I wasn’t aware of at the beginning, such as the Paralegal Town Hall. I was elected as a representative from Anderson College, which has been a meaningful experience. I encourage students entering the program to explore ways to get involved. Stay committed to your studies, maintain your professionalism, and keep your integrity at the forefront. The rewards will follow, and opportunities will present themselves in ways you may not expect.
“When you come in with the right intentions, the right things begin to fall into place. Anderson College has provided me with these opportunities, and I am grateful. Approach the experience with an open mind and see where it leads. Stay committed to your growth, and opportunities will take you further than you may have imagined.”
