The Role and Responsibilities of, and Opportunities for, a Security Guard.
As a security guard, above all, your overall role is to make the world a safer place and protect people within it, no matter what industry or position you take on.
Your responsibilities may span maintaining order and enforcing regulations at events or within establishments, implementing security measures to protect people or property, ensuring safety and emergency procedures are followed, performing screenings or conducting investigations, among other protective services as required by your clients or employer.
You may work within the private or public sector, financial institutions, and retail, cultural, educational, healthcare establishments, to name a few. You may even choose to be self-employed and contract your services to those in need.
What are the Requirements to Be a Security Guard?
Meet the base requirements:
- 18 years of age or older
- Eligible to work in Canada
- Clean criminal record in Canada
- Able to pass the Security Guard Test (government
regulated).

Upon successful completion of either one of these programs, Anderson College students have the extraordinary opportunity to apply the skills they’ve obtained and experience a work placement with the highly regarded Commissionaires Great Lakes. They are a division of “Commissionaires, Canada’s premier security solutions and identification services provider, serving central and southwestern Ontario.”

John has 25 years experience as a military policeman with the Canadian Army, two years specializing in copyright and trademark infringement, and then worked for 10 years as Head of Security for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton.
