Commissionaires Placement for Anderson’s Police Foundation Students!

Anderson College is thrilled to announce that its Law Enforcement / Police Foundations students will now be able to experience a work placement with the highly regarded Commissionaires Great Lakes. They are a division of “Commissionaires, Canada’s premier security solutions and identification services provider, serving central and southwestern Ontario.”
This is an incredible opportunity for students to apply the skills obtained within their police foundations course and security guard training and contribute to an organization with a rich history, and one that upholds a powerful mission and vision.
Commissionaires’ is a not-for-profit “rooted in providing compassion, care and hope to many within the veteran and law enforcement community.” It’s mandate “is to create meaningful and challenging employment opportunities for former members of the Canadian Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and others who wish to contribute to the security and well-being of Canadians.”
Anderson College’s Chief Operating Officer, Rose Elia, had this to say, “We are delighted and honoured to be associated with such a prestigious organization whose history goes back almost 100 years. Completing placement at Commissionaires will give our students invaluable real-world experience with an industry-leading company, providing them with the tools they need to succeed after graduating.”
And then we had the distinct privilege of interviewing Elizabeth Evangelista, Anderson College’s Education Training and Support at our Mississauga campus and she offered insights on the details of this opportunity and what it will specifically mean for our Law Enforcement / Police Foundations students.
Lisa shares all you need to know about this exciting development …
Our Agreement with Commissionaires – An Introduction
After working on this opportunity for the past couple months, I am so pleased that Anderson College has signed this placement agreement with Commissionaires for our Law Enforcement/Police Foundations students. It is a great opportunity for placement and possible future employment, as Commissionaires are currently recruiting police foundations program (PFP) graduates to hire.
I’m always looking for different educational experiences for our students. This placement agreement is something positive and it’s a step in the right direction for a student’s career as well.
We used Commissionaires for National Academy many years ago, but then they just stopped taking students because they got too busy. So, I was so happy when they signed with me again for Anderson College. It did take a lot of time, two months of back and forth, asking me questions to make sure that we will send them the right candidates, since they’re very well known in the community.
Commissionaires has been around for over 90 years, protecting people and properties in southern Ontario in the private and public sector. They take a lot of pride in exceptional service. They’re very committed and dedicated to customer loyalty, so they want to make sure that we send them good students.
They hire students as well so they’re a great employment opportunity. After spending four weeks with them, training, in the past, they would keep students if they were good candidates because they need people. Fortunately, they’re growing and they’re very focused on employee success and growth. And it sounds like they really believe in their team and focus on exceptional training. They believe in supporting their staff. So, for me, I think that it’s an amazing opportunity for students and it’s a jumpstart in their career. I’m really excited about this, and I think it’s good for Anderson College to have affiliations with companies that are well known. And while Commissionaires, do provide experience for those who want to become a security guard, the placements happen at airports and different places. Students can do investigations, and explore identification services and so much more. There are so many opportunities. Also, Commissionaires rotate students, so they get a little bit of experience in each department to see what they like.
Locations and Placements for Students Near Their Homes
I signed with Commissionaires Great Lakes which is in southern Ontario, and they have five different locations in Ontario including Mississauga, Oakville, Scarborough, London and Barrie.
I’ve been asked to send them the resumes of the students who are interested with the students’ addresses on the resume. They will interview the students to make sure that they’re good candidates, but they want the address because they will place them as close to their homes as possible. It’s really nice of them to do. And this is also why I get the feeling that opportunities for students are for the long term; they want to try and hire these students in areas where they feel comfortable, to keep them.
The Process for Placement
A month or two before their placement date, students will be contacted by the placement coordinator at their campus to see who is interested in going to Commissionaires. The student needs to submit a resume, including their address, and there is going to be an interviewing process to qualify.
Students wishing to do their placement at Commissionaires must:
- Have a clear police record
- Follow the Commissionaires vaccine policy
- Have their valid security license
During the program, they have a security guard module. Once they complete that module, they are eligible to write their security guard license. They need to have this if they want to go to Commissionaires - Submit their resume 3-4 weeks in advance, with home address
- Be interviewed prior to starting placement.
Additional Information for You
We’re always looking for opportunities to make our students’ educational experiences positive ones, and that applies to placement opportunities as well. Commissionaires provides a variety of different services, such as security investigation, and identification services and they’re known for cutting-edge training programs. This is truly an excellent educational partnership.
I’m very hopeful that the students who go there will be very successful. And even if students are not awarded employment after their placement, having a four-week experience and putting Commissionaires on a resume looks fantastic. It’s great exposure for the student and it’s a foot in the door and in the right direction for a successful career!
