Top 6 Reasons to Become a Personal Support Worker

Top 6 Reasons to Become a Personal Support Worker

Whether launching your first or next career, if you’re looking for a position that makes a difference in the lives of others, every day – one that empowers you to balance personal needs with the compassionate care of others – then this may be the perfect fit for you.

If you’ve been researching the potential of a personal support worker program or are determining what achieving your personal support worker certificate entails, we’re got you covered.

Becoming a personal support worker or PSW, has myriad advantages; let’s take a look at the highlights of what you can expect so you can make an informed decision and understand exactly the next steps you can take to get launched – in less than 1 year!

6 Key Reasons to Become a Personal Support Worker

1. High Demand / High Reward

With an aging population, and people with their sights on not just quantity but quality of life, PSWs play a key role in the health and well-being of patients. Working under the direction of a registered nurse or registered practical nurse, PSWs assist in providing critical support in the areas of personal hygiene, meal preparation, household management and so much more.

With hospitals filled to overflowing and a bursting home-care sector, there is a significant and growing need for compassionate PSWs to not only assist with patients’ physical needs but also to deliver care with dignity and respect for each individual, honouring their unique needs. Understanding what a person requires, caring for them at their most vulnerable and seeing the difference you make, is an indescribable reward that flows freely in this position.

2. Job Security

A constant and ongoing demand for healthcare workers to support aging baby boomers, and families in desperate need for caring professionals to guide them through the process and support their loved ones, means solid job security. There will always be a demand for trained PSWs to assist the elderly with medical conditions. And with all this in mind, it’s not surprising that there are numerous positions available in the healthcare industry at care homes, hospitals, and other medical facilities.

3. Rich Range of Responsibilities

No two days on the job are the same. As a PSW you will use a broad range of skills, from physical, personal support, guidance in household matters and professional and meaningful communication with patients, families and other healthcare providers to organization and attention to detail in your record keeping.

4. Variety and Flexibility

Once you’ve completed your PSW course you will be well equipped to provide your knowledge and skills within a wide range of work environments from home care facilities and hospitals to other community-based organizations. And the hours that you keep can truly offer you a work/life balance few professionals are able to realize. You can fit your job and hours around your lifestyle and align with an environment that can support that.

5. Ability to Make a Powerful Difference

From those who are aging to those facing chronic illness or temporary or long-term disability, you are the grace, kindness and vital support they need in their lives. How you encourage and empower patients, often determines their sense of dignity and can influence their sense of self worth, even hope for the days or years ahead. As a PSW, you have a unique opportunity to directly impact the life of another and seeing the difference you make ripples out to you, enhancing your own mental health and well-being.
