Prior to the pandemic, perhaps the general population thought little of how products arrived at their favourite store or their front door. But with lockdowns, shuttered boarders, and restrictions due to vaccines, our world seemed to nearly come to a grinding halt. Shelves lay empty and items we desperately needed sat on ships in the harbour, delayed by weeks or months. We suddenly realized the process of product creation to delivery and the customer connection and the communications along the way needed a massive upgrade.
So, what precisely is supply chain management and the logistics involved; why is it significant to people, businesses and communities; and what extraordinary opportunity exists for those looking for a career that is evolving and in demand?
Before you enrol in supply chain management courses, engage in supply chain and logistics training and set your sights on supply chain management certification … this is what you’ll want to know.
What is supply chain management and logistics?
From idea and product creation to delivery, there is a complex web and flow to get it from the creator and manufacturer to the end user. The whole process includes planning, coordinating details from creation and sourcing raw materials, manufacturing to assembly and completion to warehouse and delivery logistics, managing each necessary activity along the way.
What is the ‘management’ of the supply chain process?
In order to ensure goods and services arrive to the end user in a timely, cost-efficient, effective manner, professionals along the supply chain need to be creative, savvy and accountable to optimize the flow of those products and services. This, in turn, significantly effects the businesses providing products and services along the chain and drives customer satisfaction and loyalty and the bottom line.
Why, precisely, is supply chain management important?
The work we do and the very lives we live, day to day, are driven by the products and services we use and require. The effective management of those goods and services, influences when and how we receive what we need, the access and affordability. The professional in charge of supply chain management and logistics, powerfully impacts the process by how they plan, coordinate, manage, critically think, and effectively perform. What they do effects millions.
An effective supply chain process and logistics management are essential for the following reasons.
- Gives us access to basic necessities – as we saw with the ‘great toilet paper shortage’ during COVID-19, and the lack of personal products lining the shelves of our corner store, there are basic needs that we count on just to live. While, significantly challenging, the pandemic did reveal a need to upgrade systems and processes that can adapt.
- Improves business efficiency, customer relationship, and the bottom line for both – when the process from creation and manufacturing to delivery is handled effectively, customers learn they can count on a company’s supplies and services, businesses are functioning optimally and can count on a customers’ business, allowing them to make more money, even perhaps save the customer money and certainly impact customer satisfaction.
- Better supply chain management reduces waste and cost – a supply chain and logistics professional who understands inventory management, operational costs and can manage effectively, can minimize waste, reduce excess, and ultimately save money for the company and the customer.
- Positions companies to have a competitive advantage – the more efficiently a company runs the better the reputation for manufacturing and delivery that businesses and clients/customers can count on. This gives them the competitive advantage in the market and, again, boosts customer satisfaction and enhances a reputation for delivering on what is promised and needed.
- Agile response allows for adaptation under all circumstances – as we learned during the pandemic, organizations need to be adaptable and agile to address and respond to unexpected circumstances. Processes that are streamlined and professionals who are able to monitor effectively will be able to diagnose, evaluate options and deal with issues and determine optimal solutions as needed, in a timely manner.
