Early Childhood Educator Shortages + Government Support = Your Next Thriving Career

Early Childhood Educator Shortages + Government Support = Your Next Thriving Career

We are all keenly aware that early childhood education (ECE) is essential to our communities, our society as a whole and our future. Shaping the young minds of tomorrow, supporting and empowering children in their formative years, promoting their emotional, social and cognitive development, is a privilege and requires qualified, passionate professionals to lead the charge.

While there has been a surge in government recognition and billions in financial investment in recent years to meet the need, there remains a significant shortage of skilled ECEs with an early childhood education diploma/early childhood educator certification.

This shortage and the federal investment of $13.2 billion to lower fees for Ontario families and deliver an average of $10 a day childcare by next September 2025, creates an unprecedented opportunity for those seeking a first or next career in this expanding, rewarding, field.

To relay the challenges our families face and the powerful and timely opportunity before you, we’ve pulled together the facts, so that you can make an informed decision and perhaps be inspired to join the ranks of those dedicated to being a part of the solution. If you’ve ever thought about exploring an ECE course/ECE program, there has never been a better time to embrace your dream.

ECE FACTS: The Challenge. The Unprecedented Opportunity. Becoming a Part of the Solution.

The Challenge

  • There is a real and present need across Canada, to support parents, particularly mothers, as they look to balance caring for their children with providing for them, and to encourage and mentor children in those formative years. While the federal government’s Canada-wide Early Learning and Childcare Plan is an essential investment, there is a massive need for qualified professionals to ensure that plan succeeds.
  • With a shortage of ECE professionals, children and families will miss out on access and studies show that children who regularly participate in ECE programs:
  • Have higher graduation rates
  • Improve work habits and grades
  • Make better decisions
  • Make gains in reading and math
  • Are excited about learning
  • Develop strong social skills.
  • ECE has been included in the Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS), in order to keep a close eye on the magnitude of the difference between the projected number of job seekers versus job openings. The reflection on early childhood educators and assistants revealed:
  • Between 2022-2031, there will be 108,800 projected job openings and only 91,500 projected job seekers.
  • These shortages must be addressed in order to support families and children across our country.

The Unprecedented Opportunity

  • Reduction in childcare fees for children five years and younger, to $10/day by September 2025.
  • Parent rebates to be paid retroactively.
  • The creation of 86,000 new, high-quality childcare spaces, helping to support predominantly female entrepreneurs dedicated to providing high-quality childcare services.
  • Maintain Ontario’s childcare tax credit program that supports 300,000 families with childcare expenses.
  • In keeping with the COPS review, the 108,800 projected job openings minus the projected number of job seekers 91,500, equals 17,300 trained and qualified professionals required to fill that shortfall.
  • Please note, that this number has the potential to be significantly higher due to the fact that as provincial childcare programs are implemented and facilities are expanded, the number of qualified ECE professionals required will increase as well.
