Early Childcare, Assistant or Educator – The Differences – to Find Your Best Fit

Early Childcare, Assistant or Educator – The Differences – to Find Your Best Fit

So, you know you’re passionate about shaping young minds and guiding the hearts of children as they embark on their learning journey; there is a difference you long to make in early childcare. Now you’re determining your focus, how best to serve these wee ones. Perhaps you’ve been exploring childcare courses, pursuing an early childhood education diploma or childhood education certification or taking a daycare course. If you’ve done your research, you’ll see two distinct streams you can choose from, becoming an early childcare assistant (ECA) or an early childhood educator (ECE). But what is the difference?

We thought laying it all out for you could help you make an informed decision about how to align your professional and life goals with your career vision.

Here’s what you need to know …

Early Childcare, Assistant or Educator – Roles, Duties, Education, Career Potential and Main Differences

EARLY CHILDCARE ASSISTANT

Your Role – As an ECA, you will have the opportunity to work closely with children from birth to age five, and parents, child educators, and other childcare providers. You work alongside an early childhood educator participating in the day-to-day operations of a childcare centre and contribute to a nurturing environment in which young children can play, learn and thrive.

Your Duties as an ECA can include:

  • Helping and empowering children as they participate, play and learn.
  • Supporting milestones in physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development.
  • Protecting their health and safety and teaching them how to protect and support others.
  • Observing and demonstrating the value of each child in their unique expression of who they are, their preferences and ways of communicating.
  • Helping each child as they build and enhance their sense of identity and seek to belong, while respecting their culture and individuality and teaching others to do the same.
  • Encouraging them as they practice good habits in eating, dressing, toileting.
  • Assessing learning and providing support in ongoing development.
  • Teaching through play, storytelling, art, drama and field trips.
  • Maintaining and cleaning equipment.
  • Preparing healthy food.
  • Creating indoor and outdoor spaces for learning and play.
  • Developing teaching aids and supporting an ECE in the development of programs.
  • Keeping good records and doing the paperwork, as required and outlined by the ECE.
  • Communicating with parents and guardians, often alongside the ECE.
  • Engaging in professional development.

Education:
The Early Childcare Assistant diploma program at Anderson College is 40 weeks, including 490 hours of practicum with on-the-job training, offsite with potential employers. It is designed to equip childcare workers with the essential knowledge, skills, and experience to provide positive and professional interactions with parents, guardians, team members, and children. It includes two practicum sessions: one with infants and one with toddlers where you will be able to incorporate classroom theory into a real work situation.

Not only will you learn various playtime activities for toddlers and infants that will help them develop senses, and the operations of a childcare facility but we integrate various skills into training such as health and safety, child development, ethical standards, guidance and nutrition.

Career Opportunities After Graduation – Beyond the practicum you engage in that has the potential to transfer into full-time employment, Anderson’s Career Services are provided to our graduates for life. We’re committed to doing all we can to help you land that dream job.

You can choose to work full time or part time, and hours will vary. Some of the places you will be qualified to put your ECA skills to work in, are:

  • Child-care centres.
  • Preschools.
  • Community centres.
  • Parks and recreation departments.
  • With families and/or support work in respective programs/facilities catering to children with special needs.
  • Before and after school programs.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR

Your Role – As an early childcare educator, you have the distinct opportunity to empower children, in a nurturing environment, in their birth-to-age-five formative years.

Through your leadership, you provide them with a rich learning experience that promotes their emotional, social, and cognitive development. In addition to offering care and support, you plan and implement inclusive programming to support children’s development by designing healthy, safe, and inclusive early learning environments, as well as building positive relationships with children, families, colleagues, and communities.

Your Duties as an ECE – Some of these can mirror the duties of an ECA, as you’re a closeknit team in providing hands-on care and support, so we’ve broken these down into the similar duties and then the ECE distinct responsibilities.

The Role of an ECE that Mirrors the Role of an ECA can include:

  • Helping and empowering children as they participate, play and learn.
  • Supporting milestones in physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development
  • Engaging in professional development.

The Distinct Role of an ECE, Differing from an ECA

As an ECE you may:

  • Oversee, design, develop and drive the details for programs that fuel children’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social growth.
  • Supervise and provide assessment and direction to ECAs.
  • Mentor and support ECAs as well as any students that work alongside you.
  • Drive communications with other childcare providers, parents and guardians and engage the ECA in these as you see fit.
  • Provide the professional foundation and direction for the establishment and the programs and offerings for children and their families.
  • Are particularly accountable, and your credibility and success are enhanced by registering as an ECE.
  • Salary is in accordance with these enhanced responsibilities.

Education:
Anderson College’s Early Childhood Educator program 1762.5 hours, including 1200 instructional hours and 562.5 hours of practicum with on-the-job training, offsite with potential employers. It offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work with young children in a variety of settings, such as early-learning programs, childcare centres, and schools. Courses cover the principles and practices of early childhood education, child development, and effective communication.

Also included are three distinct placements to enrich students’ practical experience and cultivate their ability to work effectively with a diverse range of age groups, including infants and toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children.

And perhaps most notably, Anderson’s ECE program has been approved by the College of Early Childhood Educators for a period of two years (2024-2026) for the purpose of meeting the education requirement for registration.

Career Opportunities After Graduation – Again, beyond the practicum you engage in that has the potential to transfer into full-time employment, Anderson’s Career Services are provided to our graduates for life.

As an ECE you can still choose to work full time or part time, and hours will vary. Obviously as an ECE, with extended education, training, and experience and in becoming registered, you will have expanded opportunities and roles. In addition to working within the places listed for ECA, some extended options for you as an ECE are:

  • Manage programs within an agency or become an agency’s executive director.
  • Operate a private childcare facility.
  • Infant consultant.
  • Child development coordinator.
  • Childcare director.
  • Administrator for childhood education centres.
  • ECE instructor educating the next generation of childcare professionals.

While the passion for children and providing a foundation that sets them up for success in education and in life are the same for an ECA and ECE, you can now see the distinctions between these professions clearly. We’re hoping that this assists you in making an informed decision on next steps, so that your life and career goals are aligned with your educational path … paving the way to your brilliant future, making a difference in our communities.
