You’ve heard about it; you and your loved ones have felt it. The shortage of doctors was an overwhelming issue for Canadians before COVID-19 taxed our healthcare system to the max and challenged essential workers day and night, as they played ‘Beat the Clock’ to save lives. We’ve had an issue on our hands for a while, but why and how is the world changing and your opportunities for this line of work and service with it?
Canada’s Challenge is Your Opportunity
Even before COVID and a surge in the need for physicians, “According to Statistics Canada, [it was estimated] that over 4.5 million people across the country [did not] have family doctors. And, there is a massive recruit of doctors from other countries by the Canadian Health Authorities to fill the gaps.”
Why do we need to pull from other countries instead of training right here at home?
There are a few reasons.
- Limited Number of Medical Schools
o Only 17 across the country – 15 if you want to attend one in English - Arduous Requirements for Med School
o It takes advanced planning, lengthy undergraduate studies, writing a Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and letters of recommendation to demonstrate your capabilities, all before you even begin your years in medical school - Low Acceptance Rate
o Even with all your passion and hard work only 15% of students are accepted into medical school on the first try and only 25% of applicants make it at all.
And yet, as we know, with challenges come opportunities. “As the population increases, doctors have become one of the most sought professions today.”
It’s no wonder why. Not only do we need you, but there are numerous benefits to following your passions into this profession.
- Job Satisfaction – you have the chance to truly make a difference, to save lives and to make a lucrative living
- Flexible Hours – while the hours can be long, that depends on where you choose to spend your time. You have the chance to determine where you serve and when.
- Job Security – you will never have to want for work, and you can count on your future prospects no matter the state of the economy. “Getting a job after your studies in Canada is not a problem. Opportunities abound for doctors and physicians in most cities in Canada.” In fact, “… the demand for doctors in Canada will increase by 13 percent, which is faster than average as compared to other occupations.”
