Ontario unveils a plan to reopen post-secondary education
We received notification that the provincial government has unveiled its plan for the first phase of the reopening of post-secondary institutions. This plan will allow us to reopen for in-person instruction to students who have completed all the theoretical portions of their vocational programs but have been unable to complete practical training that requires in-person delivery.
“Ontario’s private career colleges are key to the province’s economic recovery and community renewal. I am proud of the sector’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and its quick action and resilience in finding innovative ways to continue training students during this unprecedented time. I will continue to consult with the postsecondary education sector on a framework for reopening that prioritizes the health and safety of all our campus communities”, said Ross Romano, Minister of Colleges and Universities. “I will continue to collaborate with the sector to determine how best to move forward on reopening our campuses in the fall and beyond in a way that is responsible and safe for our students and staff.”

What does the news mean to you?
The health and safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. We will be developing a phased plan to bring you back starting July (further details are still to come). Note, depending on your progress and program, the date for each student’s return to the in-person instruction can vary.
I am sure you will have a lot of questions. While we map out the plan to bring you back, please feel free to email your questions to connect@andersoncollege.com– in the email subject please include your campus and student ID. We will be answering your questions as soon as we have the relevant information.
No Ontarian will be declined a test
The province of Ontario released its testing plan on Friday May 29, 2020 – Ontario now has the most open testing criteria in the country.
Ontario’s testing guidance now indicates that you should visit an assessment centre if you:
- have at least one of the symptoms of COVID-19
- do not have symptoms but are concerned you might have been exposed
- do not have symptoms but think you are at risk through your employment (for example, if you are an essential or health care worker)
- would like to be tested
To support Ontarians who have identified the need to get tested, as of May 24, 2020, people will no longer need a referral to go to any of the more than 130 assessment centres across Ontario for testing. No Ontarian will be declined a test.
Please visit Ontario’s website to learn more about how the province continues to protect Ontarians from COVID-19. Local information is also available from your local public health unit.
Since many of you loved the short stories we shared previously, here are some new ones, which hopefully, will bring a smile on your face.
Virtually no competition
While professional soccer is still struggling to find a firm foothold in the United States, in the 1970s the North American Soccer League marked the brave first attempt to introduce the game to American sports fans. While most teams had only limited success at best, one did manage to break through to genuine mainstream popularity – the New York Cosmos.
It was the brainchild of Steve Ross, a passionate soccer fan who was also a major executive at Warner Communications.
Max Ross told his son Steve: “In life there are those who work all day, those who dream all day, and those who spend an hour dreaming before setting to work to fulfill those dreams. Go into the third category because there’s virtually no competition”.

What difference does it make?
Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a person going back and forth between the surf’s edge and the beach, back and forth this person went. As the man approached, he could see that there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand.
The man was stuck by the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish, many of them were sure to perish. As he approached, the person continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing them into the surf.
As he came up to the person, he said: “You must be crazy. There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can’t possibly make a difference.” The person looked at the man. He then picked up one more starfish and threw it back into the ocean.
He turned back to the man and said: “It sure made a difference to that one!”
Sincerely,
The Anderson College Team
