1- Your Role
Your role as an Occupational Health and Safety professional is to protect the physical and mental well-being of people in the workplace. Your role also includes driving, implementing, and managing health and safety initiatives to prevent work-related accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
2- Your Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will be the following:
- Identifying risks and hazards
- Creating health and safety plans
- Delivering training programs
- Investigating complaints, accidents, and injuries
- Dealing with the Worker’s Compensation Board and disability claims
- Conducting ongoing inspections
- Developing strategies to continuously improve workplace health and safety in a variety of environments
3- Required Skills
Occupational Health and Safety careers require good communication and interpersonal skills. The job will include working with all levels of staff and management. It is important for your role that you are a collaborative team player.

The Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) offers 2 certifications: the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and the Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) certifications.
Both certifications are a great advantage as they indicate your professional growth and credibility. Being certified is also an asset as you look for employment, as it can increase your chances of being hired and can lead to a higher salary.
