Puneet’s journey began with a deep interest in how Canadian law works, how governments make decisions, and how legislation evolves over time. That fascination led her to pursue the paralegal diploma program, even as she balanced being a working mom of two.

“I have always been passionate about learning law, Canadian history, and how different acts have been reformed over time. I’m really interested in how our government works. That curiosity inspired me to start my diploma and career here in Canada.”

Her love of learning and desire for a meaningful career became the driving force behind her leap into legal education.

As a busy mother and full-time employee, Puneet needed flexibility and strong academic support. She researched accredited paralegal programs in Ontario, called several colleges, and found Anderson College stood out immediately.

“I found Anderson College while researching accredited paralegal programs in Ontario. Since I’m a working mom with two kids, I wanted a college close to home but still strong academically. I spoke with your coordinator, and after talking to Mr. Ian Bell, I felt confident Anderson was the right place. He told me the course material was thorough; the instructors were knowledgeable and supportive, and always willing to help. The classes were perfectly fitting into my schedule—daily, Monday to Friday, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., after work hours. That conversation with Mr. Ian Bell made me confident that yes, Anderson College is the right place for me to do my paralegal diploma.”

This reassurance, combined with a practical schedule and strong credentials, confirmed her choice.

A Comprehensive, High-Standard Learning Experience

Puneet describes her year in the program as rigorous, disciplined, and transformative. With 24 courses, frequent exams, and in-person learning, she was pushed to perform at her highest level.

“It was a really good program. I learned a lot because this program is very comprehensive. We covered almost 24 courses in one year. At Anderson College, the minimum passing grade for each course was 70%, and that high standard kept us all disciplined and consistent. We were focused and put in a great effort to pass the course. It was a very good experience that pushed me to stay motivated and do my best.”

“The instructors were very helpful and approachable. They made learning easy and always encouraged us to do our best. I remember Mr. George always told us to choose one subject that would help us overall, and that subject was Legal Research. This subject helped us research every statute and case law related to a problem or issue. This meant that we could apply the right statute or act in real-life scenarios. That skill has been so valuable.”

This mentorship strengthened her research, problem-solving, and analytical abilities – cornerstones of paralegal work.

Practicum at Legal Aid Ontario: Applying Knowledge with Purpose

One of the most meaningful parts of Puneet’s journey was her practicum placement at a community clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario.

“I was well-prepared before going into my practicum. The clinic conducted an interview before selecting me for the practicum, testing my technical skills. That process confirmed my readiness and also gave me a clear understanding of what they expected from me. Combined with the training and guidance from my instructors, I felt well-prepared to take on the tasks and responsibilities during my placement.

“I was able to apply the knowledge and skills I learned in class—from client communication to problem-solving—where I was using the right act or statute to solve the problems of every client that came to the help desk. It was challenging initially, but helping society in that way was a very different and rewarding feeling.”

Through hands-on experience, she strengthened her competence in specialized areas of law and gained confidence for real-world practice.

Preparing for the Paralegal Licensing Exam

Anderson’s instructors guided Puneet through scenario-based learning and exam strategies—essential for passing the Law Society of Ontario’s (LSO) demanding exam.

“Our instructors prepared us very well for the paralegal licensing exam. They explained that the questions in the Law Society exam would be scenario-based and designed to test not just cognitive ability, but also ethics, paralegal professional conduct and guidelines and your paralegal competencies. Both in-class exercises and my practicum experience helped me practice analyzing those scenarios and applying the law, which really boosted my confidence heading into the exam.”

For Puneet, focused paralegal exam preparation and consistent study habits made the difference.

“I registered in May and studied intensely until July, sometimes sleeping only three hours a night. I only used the Law Society material and my course books. That’s the best advice, don’t buy extra material; just study thoroughly and organize your time.”

She passed the exam on her first attempt. She shared the thrill of this accomplishment with us.

“I absolutely felt thrilled. When I saw my results, I had a mix of emotions—I was laughing and crying at the same time. It wasn’t an easy journey, especially since law is my second career. I originally studied engineering and completed my master’s in Electronics and Communication Engineering, so reaching this milestone in a completely new field made it even more special and rewarding for me.”

Career Success and Future Goals

Today, Puneet is already employed, gaining experience, while she begins her career as a licensed paralegal.

“I’ve been employed since the start of the course. I am currently working as an office manager, handling operational and administrative duties. With my new paralegal license in hand, I now have the ability to provide legal services independently as a licensed paralegal in my permitted areas, whenever I’m ready”

Her path reflects how strong preparation, practical experience, and determination pave the way for advancement in the legal field.

Advice for Future Students and Working Moms

Puneet’s guidance is heartfelt, realistic, and inspiring—especially for parents balancing multiple responsibilities.

“I would say this is a very comprehensive course. A student needs to stay motivated all year. You can’t lose your confidence—you have to perform every day. To be consistent and show results to your instructors, you have to make a habit of reading four to five hours daily, even if you are working or are a mom. I had to treat those responsibilities as non-negotiable parts of my life and still carve out study time — it’s tough, but possible with planning.

“Even after completing the course, the material provided by the Law Society is extensive and needs at least three thorough readings before the exam. For me I couldn’t shut off my job and do a full-time course because I needed to provide for my kids. So, I had to manage my time carefully.”

Her message to women is especially powerful:
“I hope more women feel encouraged to pursue this path. Many of us balance multiple responsibilities while working toward our goals. I worked full time, had two kids, and studied. My advice is don’t get scared. Start the program and work hard. Hard work doesn’t just mean reading; it means reading with understanding, so you can answer questions. That’s the best advice for anyone in a similar situation: it’s possible, and you can do it.”

Her discipline shows what is possible when determination meets opportunity.
