From Homemaker to Professional, at 50 Frances-Anne Reignites Her Dreams!

As we all have, Anderson College students have faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In an attempt to focus on the triumphs and celebrate the courage and tenacity of our community, we launched a My2020 Story Campaign. Students were asked a few poignant questions to spark the sharing of their experiences and insights. The response was overwhelming and, in the process, we have been blown away by their authentic sharing and inspired by the powerful lessons they have learned. We are grateful to all those who contributed and are richer for having you in our Anderson family.
Here is one such story, for you …
I decided to go back to school to get my diploma. As a homemaker for most of my life, it was time to give myself to helping people other than my family. After my husband lost his job, I had a chance to make a difference in our family dynamics. I was excited.
I am thankful for the hope that 2020 brought!
The year 2020 impacted all of our lives in many weird and wonderful ways. It was a time in history that we will never forget, but hopefully we will forgive and let go of the negative aspects of that year. I would like to write about a few of the positive things that happened and that will continue to unfold in the lives of my family.
First, I will start with my husband. 2020 started off with him landing the job of his dreams, but as ‘luck’ would have it, COVID-19 happened, and his job was terminated. The emotional rollercoaster that occurred after this news was something so unexpected and so different than my family had ever felt before. First, we experienced disbelief, followed by anger, humility, resignation, anxiety, and fear. After months of healing, my husband emerged as a new person. The passion he once had for his career had returned. He had a new pep in his step and positive vibes all around him most of the time. I am grateful 2020 brought this about.
“I realized that I had an interest in the medical field as well. 2020 had pushed me into making something of myself and getting qualified to work in this field was my only option.”
Now, the following is my 2020 story. I started the year off as a homemaker, which I had basically been for most of my marriage of almost 25 years. I was about to start a job in March when the lockdown happened. I found a job in administration and worked long hours for minimum pay. Even though I liked office work, I always felt that I wanted to help people as well.
After high school, I went straight into the working world, and then I got married. I never had the opportunity to get my diploma or degree. It was a rewarding and enjoyable experience raising my kids, but something was missing. When my daughter started studying nursing, I realized that I had an interest in the medical field as well. 2020 had pushed me into making something of myself and getting qualified to work in this field was my only option. I am grateful for finding Anderson College and becoming a Medical Office Administrator, as this excites me. Once again, I am grateful for 2020.

My experience is proof that it is never too late to start a new career, as I am at the age of 50 years old. 2020 gave me the push, and so my final word on what that year meant to me is that out of adversity I found purpose and meaning in my life. I know this is the way forward for my success and serving others, and for this I will forever be grateful for the year 2020.
