From COVID Challenges to Supply Chain Career Success – Bilal’s Story

At Anderson College, we are constantly amazed by the courage of our students, faculty, and staff. In December 2021 we ran a “My Courageous Moment” story-gathering campaign to celebrate our students, their strength, the moments that have defined their lives and the people who have motivated them to overcome and succeed.
In sharing our stories, we realize we are not alone and are often inspired to recognize, or to find, our own extraordinary courage. We hope the following story moves you, as it has our Anderson family.
Just like the rest of the world, I was shocked and frightened at the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak. The pandemic changed multiple lifestyles of work, entertainment and every walk of life. As an IT Help Desk employee, alongside my team, I took the responsibility of setting up our 1500+ employees to be able to work from home. We completed this task (Business Continuity Plan) within five days.
We got complaints about work interruptions, and issues like re-imaging systems and other breaks and fixes we had to assist with to help the employees who were working from home. We took the services of shipment companies and started visiting offices of controlled environments. We received desktops and laptops and made them workable again with limited resources and couriered them back to the employees. After that it was a lockdown, I will not go in detail as it was the worst time.
“I started searching to establish my skills in such way that could help humanity in a better way. Luckily, I found Supply Chain and Logistics program at Anderson College.”
This worst time gave me the opportunity to recalibrate my skills from my field job to be able to work from home. The movement of assets (IT Equipment) through couriers gave me an idea to pursue a diploma or degree. On April 14, 2020, this thought was further fueled by the emergence of Amazon’s ability to provide commodities to people even in a halted world (when Amazon stock hit a new all-time high with unprecedented demand).
I started searching to establish my skills in such way that could help humanity in a better way. Luckily, I found the Supply Chain and Logistics program at Anderson College. Later, I secured admission even though it was a very difficult decision to making during such uncertain and ambiguous times.
I consider all that happened a blessing in disguise. The challenges I faced pushed me to pursue new avenues for my profession. Now I am able to innovate and establish new techs, using the mixture of my background in IT and the supply chain and logistics knowledge and training I received at Anderson College. And I am able to use those talents and training for the prosperity of mankind and for the ease of working in new ways in a new world.
There is always room to learn new skills in our life.
