2- Work experience

In addition to your education, having work experience in the field can make a difference for employers. When completing your Medical Laboratory Technician training, you will most likely get the opportunity to go on a practicum. Practicums can be done in laboratories, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities. It is a great way to show future employers that you have applied what you have learned in the classroom and that you are familiar with the working environment. It is a great advantage when looking for a job in Ontario.

3- MLPAO and CSMLS certifications

Obtaining your national and provincial certifications are a necessity if you want to find employment. After graduating from your Medical Laboratory Technician diploma program, you will be eligible to sit the exams to obtain both certifications. To work in Ontario, we strongly advise that you take the Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO) certification exam, as this is often required by employers. We also recommend that you take the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) exam, as this will allow you to work outside of Ontario, in case you decide to move to a different province.*

Both certifications are recommended as they show that you are up-to-date with the latest knowledge and skills. If you are successful in passing these exams, you will receive many advantages when joining these associations. As a member, you will also be able to receive ongoing training throughout your career.

*Please ensure you check the regulations of any other province in which you wish to work, as different provinces can have varying requirements.
