Starting a second career seems like a challenge to many, but it is possible, as Inga has demonstrated. She started a second career herself and has helped many of her clients start theirs too.
Inga used to be a cook at Yummy Market before she resigned due to medical reasons and decided to go back to school. At the time, she was unaware of the Second Career Program. While volunteering at a clinic, one of her friends told her that she may be eligible and encouraged her to try and apply.
Since she had an accounting background from back home, she chose to continue her studies within this field. Today, she has two companies. The first is an accounting firm and the second is an agency where she provides career counselling. Inga also helps clients with their immigration processes, especially obtaining study permits.
The Second Career Program is not well-known by many, and Inga herself discovered the program through a friend. However, the program provides great help to those who have been laid-off or wish to further their existing career. Thanks to her experience through the program and helping over 18 clients to pursue their second career, Inga has provided us with advice and knowledgeable insights on the Second Career Program.
As mentioned on the Second Career Ontario Website, “the Second Career Program pays for the training or education that you may require to get a better job. It provides financial help up to $28,000 to cover various costs such as tuition, books, travel, living expenses and more.” Inga also explained that there are different aspects to the eligibility criteria, including your level of education, as well as periods of employment and/or unemployment.

You will then receive a certain number of points, which will determine your eligibility. Once you are deemed eligible, you will need to select a school at which you wish to complete the program of your choice. When deciding on which program to choose, you must keep in mind Ontario’s labour market prospects and consult the Government Job Bank as it will display the specific skillset and education that will be required in your chosen career path.
“My advice would be to look for a program which interests you, because if you like the program, you will be more successful. Once you find the right program, you then need to choose the right school for you,” said Inga. Once you have chosen a program and the respective college, you will be guided by an Admissions Advisor who will be able to provide you with further information about the Second Career Program and your eligibility.
Inga’s final piece of advice is to, “listen to yourself, choose the right program and to choose the right college.”
