After Facing Challenges as an Immigrant and Raising Twins – Hemangi’s Pharmacy Technician Dream is Now Real

As we all have, Anderson College students have faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In an attempt to focus on the triumphs and celebrate the courage and tenacity of our community, we launched a My2020 Story Campaign. Students were asked a few poignant questions to spark the sharing of their experiences and insights. The response was overwhelming and, in the process, we have been blown away by their authentic sharing and inspired by the powerful lessons they have learned. We are grateful to all those who contributed and are richer for having you in our Anderson family.
Here is one such story, for you …
2020 was a remarkable year in my life as it gave me the opportunity to achieve my long-standing goal of perusing a professional degree. I feel absolutely positive and determined to reach my destination and wear a white coat as registered pharmacy technician in the next two years, as well as contributing in a healthcare profession.
Life is a journey with unexpected stops and turns. What matters the most is that we stay on the path we love. However, many people tend to not get up after a fall and blame luck for their not getting their expected results. The most important thing is that one should stick to the plan and progress towards the goal. I am not an exception and have faced numerous ups and downs in this journey, but then in 2020 I took leap of faith and everything changed. I have been a very bright student since starting school. However, due to plenty of hurdles I never got a chance to finish my bachelor’s degree.
“I feel absolutely positive and determined to reach my destination and wear a white coat as registered pharmacy technician in the next two years, as well as contributing in a healthcare profession.”
In other words, although I completed my secondary education in 2007, to date I do not have a professional degree. There are a couple of reasons for that. Firstly, after enrolling and completing my first year of my BBA program in India, my whole family migrated to the USA for a career opportunity that my father got in 2008. Secondly, after starting a course in liberal arts for two years in United States, my student visa was rejected due to a documentation error, and I moved back to India in 2011.
My highest education was still just secondary school at that time, due to uncompleted courses in both countries. I got married in 2013 followed by the arrival of my twins in 2014 and raising twins was a challenging, 24×7, job that kept me extensively busy for the last 6 years –Unable to pursue my degree.
Eventually, after all these years of partial study and migrating to different countries, the passion I felt for education somewhat died inside me, and I considered myself defeated and decided to go with the flow just like a mediocre person. However, in2020, a new chapter of my life began when I moved to Canada with my family as a permanent resident.
“There are many obstacles still in front of me. […] But no matter what I am facing right now, I have made up my mind and the dream of wearing a white coat with a professional degree is just few steps away.”

My hope for getting a degree was long gone but at the same time I never got closure with my education and I always wanted my kids to look up to me as a role model. As well, I wanted to set an example that age is just a number and if one decides to achieve something then he/she can, with hard work and dedication. Luck plays a partial role too.
I was fortunate enough to come across the Pharmacy Technician course and with enormous support and guidance from the Anderson College Admissions faculty I was enrolled, after completing a series of pre-requisites in a timely manner. There are many obstacles still in front of me. Nine years of a study gap, raising six-year-old twins, completing a core science educational course without a science background are some of them. But no matter what I am facing right now, I have made up my mind and the dream of wearing a white coat with a professional degree is just few steps away.
2020 kept me on the path of achieving my long-standing goal and was a phenomenal year for me. All in all, I wrap up by concluding that, life is not a straight road that leads to one’s destination; the ups and downs are an essential part of this journey. What matters the most is that one keeps the spark alive and intent on achieving their desires.
I have faced many obstacles in pursuing a degree and still at the age of 30 I was without a degree and job. I lost hope at times, but then I realized life is precious and trust me, just when you think it is not going to happen, you will be shown a new way and in no time, you will be on that path to achieving your dreams.
Moral – Life can be hard at times and you might not get what you want or expect but always remember, that is not the end. Something better is in store for your future, so never lose hope and continue working positively in the direction of your dream.
