7 Tips to Give you the Competitive Edge as a Pharmacy Assistant

1. Launch from a Solid Foundation

Whatever pharmacy assistant course you choose, ensure you are gaining theoretical knowledge and practical training from those who are experts in the industry. Select a program in a college that has a track record for leading-edge curriculum, ideally, training within a simulated pharmacy lab setting, and solid business community relationships so that you can gain hands-on experience via a practicum off-site with potential employes. Your educational foundation will pave the way for your ability to graduate with confidence and land the job you desire.

If you’re in the phase of exploring your education, you can:

2. Engage in Perpetual Learning

The pharmaceutical industry is rapidly and ever evolving. From new medications and regulations, to technology, systems and always taking your patient-care game up a notch, stay in the know. Engage in continuing education programs and professional workshops and read up on the latest advancements in pharmacy, regularly. This keeps your knowledge relevant and makes you invaluable in the workplace.

3. Hone Your Attention to Detail and Efficient Delivery

As you gain knowledge and skills and apply what you know on the job, you can become a real leader in efficiency. Accuracy is crucial when it comes to medication dispensing, prescription processing and record keeping, but there’s more that will set you apart. Be on the lookout for how you can improve systems and delivery, support for the pharmacist and for your healthcare team. Attending to the details on all levels, keeps things running smoothly and your colleagues will be appreciative of your dedication to organization and ensuring every job is done exceedingly well.

4. Cultivate Exceptional Communications Skills

Beyond being able to be counted on for details and organization, you want to be known for being an excellent communicator. Doing a job well is only half of it; keeping team members apprised of what you are doing to support and communicating with clarity, confidence, humility and with a focus on how you can best serve, will shine a light on what makes you an exceptional team member. Connecting with patients, actively listening, demonstrating empathy, and providing clear medication instructions and doing your best to alleviate customer concerns, will make you a favorite to colleagues and patients alike.

5. Exemplify Professionalism and Integrity

From your dress and positive attitude towards your team and customers, to your adherence to privacy and confidentiality, be the example of someone who can be counted on to do what is professional, of integrity, in alignment with industry regulatory guidelines and one who always acts in an ethically sound manner.

6. Nurture Team Dynamics and Collaboration

You will work alongside a variety of healthcare professionals and community members, from pharmacists, and other PAs to insurance providers and more. Keep teamwork, supportive communications, and cooperation top of mind. See where there is a need and consider how you can be of assistance. Go above and beyond what is required in all your work relationships, and you will ever be known as the person others can count on. This is what true leadership is all about.

7. Strengthen Personal and Professional Development

Advancing and enhancing your professional skills in this ever-evolving field is essential, so too is learning and growing in your personal life.
