Short Story 1 – Know Your Value

A father says to his daughter, “As you graduated with honours, here is a car I acquired many years ago. Before I give it to you, please take it to the used car dealership and tell them you would like to sell it – see how much they offer you for it.

The daughter went to the used car dealership, returned to her father and said, “They offered me $1,000 because it looks very worn out.”

The father said, “Take the car to the pawn shop and see how much they offer you for it.” The daughter went to the pawn shop, returned to her father and said, “The pawn shop offered $100 because it is a very old car.”

The father then asked his daughter to go to a car club and show them the car. The daughter took the car to the club, returned and told her father, “Some people in the club offered $100,000 for it since it’s a vintage, iconic car and is highly sought after.”

The father said to his daughter, “The right place values you the right way, If you are not valued, do not be angry, it means you are in the wrong place.”

There are always those who know your value and who appreciate you, so make sure you surround yourself with people who see your value.

Short Story 2 – The Teacher’s Hand

Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment — to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.

Most of the class would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her student’s art. And they were.

Douglas made a different kind of picture, as he was a different kind of boy. As other children played at recess, Douglas was likely to stand close by his teacher’s side.

Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.

His abstract image captured the imagination of his peers. Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raise turkeys. Another suggested a police officer, because the police protect and care for people. The discussion continued for some time.

When the children had gone on to other assignments, she paused at Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was.
The little boy looked away and muttered, “It’s yours.”

She recalled the times she had taken his hand and walked with him to different places, as she had done with the other students. She had often said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside”, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil”, or, “Let’s do this together.” Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand.

Brushing aside a tear, she thanked Douglas for his wonderful piece of art.

Sincerely,
The Anderson College Team
