You’ve discovered your passion, applied your savvy, dedicated your late nights to the cause and aced your courses. Now you’re looking to leverage that training and knowledge to land the dream job.
The job search is the next step and you’re sure you’ve ‘got this’. We hope so and we’re rooting for you, but …
While there are myriad factors that may influence whether you succeed in the short or long run that aren’t in your control, there are many that are. Understanding where others have fallen short can be your ticket to recognizing how you can avoid these mistakes and actually use that knowledge to gain the competitive edge.
5 Job-Search Mistakes Recent Grads Make & How to Leverage Them for Your Success
1. Blurry Targets – Clarify.
Whether you’re in the process of researching public or private colleges in Ontario or have graduated from a college in Toronto, being new to the job-search scene can mean you don’t have a full grasp of the power of clarity when it comes to goals. Like a ship headed out from the harbour, if you don’t have a destination and a map to get you there, chances are you’ll be adrift for quite some time before you find shore, if ever. If you aimlessly apply for positions that aren’t aligned with your career strategy and strengths, you’ll waste countless hours and end up with offers you don’t want, farther from your goals than when you began. So first …
- Consider your career aspirations.
- Search for roles that align with your interests.
- Imagine yourself in the position and if you feel a surge of excitement, you know you’re on the right track.
2. Limited Searches – Expand.
If you’re only looking at jobs that are posted, you are narrowing the possibilities for yourself. What you truly desire may not be the one that crosses your feed. You must branch out, expand your searches online and your connections in person in your community.
- Beyond what is posted, research the companies that inspire you.
- Research the people and positions within those companies.
- Expand your network, on LinkedIn, in the community you’re in.
- Ask questions and set up informational interviews.
- You never know where one relationship may lead next.
3. Hiding – Bust Out.
The world of today expects that you’ll be ‘out there’, you’ll have profiles and presence. They will want to suss you out, see what you’re about; so best be prepared.
- Create profiles that shine, that reflect who you are, what you bring and that offer an insight into what you’ve done that is exceptional thus far, even if that’s just your unbridled enthusiasm for the possibilities and ability to contribute to what’s ahead.
- Make sure your presence and posts, on all social media platforms, are what your grandmother, or potential employer, would be impressed to read. Nothing is private really, so polish up your image if need be and ensure your best foot is always forward.
4. Being Bashful – Go On … Shine!
This is not the time to be shy, to be modest about your strengths, giving up the credit to someone else.
- You need to show that you are capable, enthused, determined, committed, and absolutely the best choice they could make for the job.
- Consider your wow-factor; put yourself in the shoes of the boss. Who would you want to hire? How would they present themselves? What would make them stand out? Do that.
- Without using countless “I”s in your materials, look at what you’ve learned, gleaned, see it all from a place of gratitude for the opportunity and express how you grew. This, in written and verbal form (when you get the chance) will blow them away.
5. Careless Presentation – Polish.
What you write, spelling, grammar, (all those things your teachers told you would matter one day), they matter now. That goes for if you’re new to the job market or new to the country. You need to reach out for help if you’re not able to edit and perfect your documents yourself. First impressions are everything and your paperwork is the first impression. Not understanding the purpose of a cover letter, forgetting to proofread your resume, not having up-to-date references, thinking a thank you letter in follow up to an interview doesn’t matter, all these things speak volumes. If you want to stand out, it begins with not standing out for the things that create the impression that you didn’t care.
- Cover letters are your first shot at making an impression. Read the job description; speak to your knowledge or passion in the area; show you know the company and the work; don’t use “I” incessantly.
- Write professionally, check spelling and grammar and always get a trusted friend to proof your documents even when, especially when, you think they’re perfect.
- Prep your references and pick the best to speak to your strengths both professionally and personally. Assume your new employer is looking for the whole package of awesome.
- Always, always thank those who gave you a chance and let them know you’re grateful and excited about the potential opportunity to contribute.
