Cardiology technologists are a vital part of the healthcare system, helping doctors and cardiologists diagnose and monitor cardiac or vascular problems in patients.
With more Canadians getting older as a result of a continuing increase in the number of residents aged 65 and above, and two of the three leading causes of death in Canada being stroke and heart disease, the need for more cardiology technicians in Canada is understandable. In fact, between now and 2026, some 23,000 jobs are projected to open in the Canadian medical technology field.
Cardiology technologist duties range from interviewing patients and recording their medical history, to conducting procedures such as echocardiograms, balloon angioplasties and stent insertions. Cardiology technologists also create reports of testing results for cardiologists to interpret.
If working in an exciting and fast-paced healthcare job interests you, then read on to learn more about the skills needed to succeed as a cardiology technologist.
Good Communication Skills:
The stats on heart disease in Canada are sobering – 9 out of every 10 Canadians possess at least one risk factor associated with stroke or heart disease. As a result, cardiology technologists are often in contact with patients who are stressed due to the possibility that their tests will reveal significant health problems. Great communication skills, maintaining a calm presence and having the ability to explain the steps involved in their procedures will offer patients reassurance and put them at ease.
Good communication skills are also important because cardiology technologists regularly communicate vital information to other healthcare professionals.
Tech Savvy:
Anyone keen on pursuing a career in cardiology technology must be able to use technology effectively. Cardiology technologists use, on a daily basis, equipment such as ECG monitors, oxygen saturation monitors and ultrasound machines, all requiring an understanding and comfort level with technology.
Problem Solving Skills:
People who work in cardiology technology are problem-solvers who find value in critical thinking. Because you will be working with physicians to diagnose and treat cardiac and peripheral vascular diseases, or diseases of the heart and blood vessels, you need to be a critical thinker who likes to try and solve problems.
Compassion:
No amount of technology, critical thinking and problem solving can replace the compassion that is necessary to support patients when they are at their most vulnerable. Because you will be working with frightened and often very sick patients, a career of this choice requires compassion and kindness.
