Ultrasound Saves Lives and So Can You!

Ultrasound Saves Lives and So Can You!

Ultrasound has shifted diagnosis from guess work to certainly in countless cases, often within minutes versus weeks or months. And when we’re dealing with our health, time is sometimes of the essence, and don’t we all want as much certainty as the situation can allow?

Ultrasound and the sonographer professionals wielding the technology and analyzing the results, alongside their medical team, are in demand more than ever. If you’re looking for a career that enriches your mind, tests your savvy and stamina, empowers you to save lives and rewards you with meaningful, lucrative work … then a career as a diagnostic medical sonographer may be just the fit for you.

Let us tell you why Ultrasound is leading the way in healthcare.

Accuracy

“Although we can ask patients questions, carry out manual examinations, take X-rays and do full blood counts, the human body is a black box. All these resources are comparatively imprecise. Ultrasound is a very valuable addition, as it provides certainty,” says Professor Joseph Osterwalder, Medical Director of the Cantonal Hospital in Appenzell, Switzerland.

From obstructions in the intestines and in the airways, to viewing a fetus to ensure they are positioned properly for a healthy birth (for baby and mom), diagnostic ultrasound can provide the accurate insight to enable treatment to begin quickly, or issues to be averted.

Empowers Medical Detectives

The leading-edge technology of sonography is not dependent on radiation to capture images (like X-ray, CT and MRI), it investigates using high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to view blood flow, organs and tissues. “Simply put, we are medical detectives, using our ultrasound training, technical skills and understanding of the human body and its systems to help physicians decide if structures are normal.” As stated by the professionals leading the #sonographerssavelives campaign.

The technology is safer, using sound waves. It is more efficient and allows for faster assessment and diagnosis. It is less invasive and therefore less traumatic for the patient. And it can be utilized in a portable form and is less expensive for hospitals to invest in than other machines. This is particularly powerful for hospitals abroad with limited budgets and many patients who haven’t always had access to life-saving technologies or the ability to receive immediate attention. You can learn more about that here …“South Sudanese doctor Achai blogs about how training in the use of new portable ultrasound machines – which have traditionally been bulky and expensive – is helping Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders (MSF) save lives in humanitarian crises.”

And “according to Osterwalder, the future lies in personalised ultrasound. This means a doctor carries his/her own ultrasound scanner in their coat pocket. ‘Ultrasound will take over from the stethoscope,’ he is convinced.”

Life-Saving Across the Board

Of course, ultrasound and ultrasound technologists support obstetrics, expectant mothers and growing babies, but they also work within many other medical disciplines and healthcare facilities, caring for patients of all ages. From heart and lung health, sports medicine to men’s and women’s health in general, from minor injuries and bruises to cancers, tumours and obstructions, the images medical sonographers capture allow doctors to effectively diagnose, treat and manage patient health.
