Guide to Choosing the Right Toothbrush: A Dental Assistant’s Tips

Guide to Choosing the Right Toothbrush: A Dental Assistant’s Tips

Given the sheer number of options out there (sometimes spanning a whole aisle at the pharmacy), choosing the right toothbrush can be confusing. Modern dental care rarely offers a one-size-fits-all solution.

Toothbrushes now come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colours, with different types and patterns of bristles. Some patients may even feel like selecting the perfect toothbrush requires expert guidance from a certified dental assistant!

If you are planning to enroll in dental assistant courses, or you’ve already started your program, here’s how you can guide patients through the complex world of toothbrushes.

How Does Toothbrush Size Affect Brushing?

While toothbrushes come in many sizes, dental assistant school graduates know the head of a toothbrush should give easy access to all tooth surfaces.

  • Children: Best with toothbrush heads between 1.5 cm and 2 cm.
  • Adults: Require a toothbrush head about 1 inch (2.5 cm) tall.

If a toothbrush is not the right size, it becomes difficult to maneuver while brushing making it harder to clean the backs and sides of the molars.

What Types of Bristles Should Patients Choose?

Toothbrushes are available with soft, medium, or hard nylon bristles.

  • Soft bristles: Safest and most comfortable for the majority, especially children.
  • Medium or hard bristles: May suit those with poor manual dexterity but can damage gums, roots, and enamel if used vigorously.

During dental assistant training, students learn why recommending soft bristles is usually best for protecting patients’ oral health.

Bristle Patterns Play an Important Role

The way the bristles are arranged on a toothbrush is referred to as the bristle pattern. You may have noticed that the bristle pattern is sometimes different on select toothbrushes. Industry experts understand that different patterns affect the way that plaque and debris is removed from the teeth. Here is a quick guide to the some of the most popular options:

Block pattern: bristles are all the same height and length and arranged neatly.

Wavy pattern: bristles are arranged in a wavy (or v-shaped) pattern, allowing for better contact with areas around tooth surfaces.

Crisscross pattern: bristles are arranged in a crisscross pattern to lift plaque effectively.

Dental assistants typically help patients select their ideal toothbrush after considering their specific needs, brushing behavior, and general oral health. They may even perform a quick demonstration to show patients how they can fully maximize their toothbrush’s unique features.
