The final push toward spring, toward warmth, family picnics, and studying under a tree parka-free, is making its way to our days. Just like those determined tree buds, we too, through the winters of our life, have had to keep a keen focus on the breakthrough, the rebirth of the next stage of our great life, to come. Our determination, our grit, makes all the difference.
Knowing our dreams, following them, finding a family and community of kindred souls to spur us on … these things empower us to feel hopeful, encouraged, courageous. With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, in this Connect, we honour and celebrate those things that make healthful living possible – our commitment to care for self, live the visions we hold and those loved ones, colleagues, instructors and cheerleaders who support us through it all. Enjoy!

A Thought to Ponder
“Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!”” ~ Robin Williams
When we have our heads down, focused on a dream, juggling responsibilities, studies, family and friend time and caring for self to maintain our stamina in it all, life can feel very serious. Spring is the invitation to pause, see the magic of what is blooming all around us and celebrate … simply celebrate, the majesty of our days, the possibility of what lies ahead and the people who grace our experiences with colour.
A Short Story to Inspire
Keep Climbing
A young monk named Kaito approached the old master under the cedar tree.
“Master,” Kaito said, his voice tight with frustration, “I have meditated every morning. I have hauled water, chopped wood, memorized every sutra. Yet I feel no closer to peace. Why does nothing change?”
The master sipped his tea slowly. “Come,” he said. “Bring your sandals.”
They climbed the nearby hill in silence. At the summit, the master pointed to a grove of bamboo swaying in the wind.
“Do you see those stalks?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“When were they planted?”
“Last spring, I think.”
“And how tall are they now?”
“Almost as tall as a man.”
The master nodded. “Do you know what they did for the first five years?”
“No.”
“Nothing. Not a single shoot. But underground, they were growing a network of roots, so that when they rose, they would never fall.”
Kaito frowned. “So, I am bamboo?”
The master smiled. “No. You are the mountain. The bamboo simply reminds you that patience and persistence are what shape even the immovable.”
Kaito bowed. “Then I will keep climbing.”
Moral: True growth often happens where no one sees. Determination is not about speed—it’s about staying rooted until it is time to rise.
