Medical Radiography Technologist

There is a critical need in the healthcare industry to address diagnostic medical imaging wait times for patients. This massive shortage of medical radiation technologists or medical radiography technologist (MRTs), while challenging for Canadians requiring care, provides an incredible opportunity for those looking to enter the field.

Anderson College has launched a Medical Radiography Technology program to provide a stream of qualified and confident graduates. If you find yourself intrigued by the potential, recognizing the steps it takes to train and launch your career can help you in making that informed decision.

Your Guide to Understanding and Becoming an MRT

1. Understand the Vital Role and Responsibilities of an MRT

Medical radiography technology is imaging technology used to diagnose various ailments and is the art and science of correctly positioning the patient and X-ray equipment to produce and record images for visualizing the extent of disease or injury. It includes the use of computed tomography (CT), interventional radiology (IR), bone densitometry and mammography (breast imaging), among others.
MRT professionals operate this state-of-the-art technology to capture images of bones, internal organs, and tissue that assist doctors in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.

As a medical radiation technologist your responsibilities may include:

  • Operate X-ray, fluoroscopic and radiographic equipment, and computerized tomography (CT) scanners and mammography units to capture radiographs or anatomic images of the human body for the diagnosis of injury or disease by radiologists,
  • Conduct quality control checks on medical imaging equipment,
  • Record information pertaining to the performed procedure
  • Communicate with patients, position patients and align diagnostic equipment for each examination,
  • Provide support as a patient moves through the radiographic procedure, adhering to all safety measures,
  • As you advance in your role, you may also be responsible for the supervision and training of other medical radiation technology students.

2. Enrol in a Credible Radiological Technology Program for Training

There are many medical radiation technologist programs available; you’ll want to select one that offers you the theoretical and hands-on practical training that ensures you are confident and in demand upon graduation.

What to look for in an MRT program:

  • Taught by industry experts, so that you receive relevant, credible, up-to-date training on the latest techniques and industry requirements,
  • Curriculum and program are driven by the highest industry standards and the college is accountable to a governing body to prepare you, and provide you with the credibility you deserve,
  • Program includes a practicum that allows you the opportunity to put your skills to the test in a healthcare setting with potential employers,
  • A team of support that will guide you through program selection, support you during your studies and ensure you are prepared to apply for, interview and ace the process of getting a position after graduation.
