From Construction to Immigration Consultant: Laziz’s Journey

By November 27, 2019June 17th, 2021No Comments

It all started with a visit to Anderson. Read Laziz’s journey, written in his own words.

My name is Laziz and I am from Uzbekistan. I moved to Canada in 2017 through the Federal Skilled Worker Program with my wife and six beautiful children. As I didn’t have much of a network, I started working at my friend’s construction company as a Project Manager and spent one whole year there. By that time, I realized I was heading in the wrong direction because my previous position in Russia was as Head of the Immigration Department for 11 years. My biggest fear was the language barrier, and I thought my English language skills were not good enough to practice Immigration Law in Canada.

Nevertheless, in the cold of January 2019, sitting at the construction site I searched for colleges on my phone and dialed Anderson College’s number with my frozen fingers. On the other end of the phone was an admissions advisor who asked me if I could come to the Downtown office for a meeting. We agreed to meet on January 24, 2019, a day that changed my life. During our meeting, I explained my situation and concerns to the advisor, and she said, “You know, Laziz, your English is much better than some Canadians!” She gave me so much inspiration that I don’t even remember how I got to my home in Scarborough after the meeting.

When I came home, I was totally shining, and my wife asked if I had won a prize or got a high-paid job offer. I said, “I am going to school again to study the immigration job that I love and did for a long 11 years in Moscow.” She was also very happy for me and told me she would support me in any of my decisions.

“In two weeks, I left my job in construction and started my Immigration Consultant program.”

In two weeks, I left my job in construction and started my Immigration Consultant program. For the first time in Canada, I took my white shirt and a jacket from the wardrobe and put on my black office shoes. My wife and six kids were shocked! They even asked me if I was going to some party or wedding.

At college, my lovely immigration class was full of students with Ph.D.’s, master’s degrees, and even several lawyers. I can frankly say that our instructor revealed all our talents. During these seven months, I gained confidence in myself and gained the belief that I can practice Immigration Law in Canada alongside Canadian-born people. With my instructors’ and family’s support, I finished the course with a 95% Honours grade. I got an internship at a well-known and respected immigration firm, Solutions Immigration, and was chosen from more than ten students who applied for the position. Now, I received job offers from several immigration firms and I am preparing for the license exam.

I would like to thank my admissions advisor, instructors, and all other Anderson College staff for helping me to find my way in Canada, the way I love and am passionate about.

Thank you,

Laziz R.
