Here’s Your Guide and the Necessary Steps to Become a Pharmacy Assistant.
Step 1 – Understand Your Career Choice
To know if this is a fit for you, it is essential to recognize what will be expected of you in this career. As a pharmacy assistant, you are a vital member of a healthcare team. You provide key support in a pharmacy environment, from preparing prescribed medications, entering orders and filling prescriptions, to ensuring that the pharmacist has verified and approved the prescription before giving the medication to the patient.
Your excellent communication and organizational skills provide the foundation for you to take note of all relevant medical details and prescription information, count and categorize pills, verify inventory with the pharmacist and provide compassionate customer care. You may even be involved with the billing process for patients.
Step 2 – Recognize Job Potential
Pharmacy assistants are in solid demand with the average base salary in Ontario being $41.740 per year, and with the potential of establishing connections within the pharmacy industry and creating job advancement opportunities for yourself.
Step 3 – Develop Skills to Excel
Beyond just the technical skills, that in and of themselves are essential, employers are looking for those soft skills that they can’t teach but invariably need to compassionately support patients and uplift their teams and work environment.
Skills to hone for success:
- Keen Observation – Processing prescriptions requires an attention to detail, accuracy, and attentiveness.
- Superior Communication – Being able to educate and support patients as they navigate how to properly take medications, and enabling them to feel seen, heard and respected is essential to any healthcare team.
- Problem Solving – Whether dealing with conflicts in the team or concerns of the patient, a person who can solve problems creatively and amicably is a powerful asset.
- Organization – Being responsible for medicines, tracking inventory, and helping to keep the workplace in order, is essential for the efficiency and success of any pharmacy healthcare team.
Step 4 – Educate to Succeed
Pharmacy assistant work requires an education, ideally one that is administered by industry experts who can help you chart your way to success, and a program that provides a balance between theoretical and hands-on skills training.
The Pharmacy Assistant program at Anderson College is 44 weeks, and includes 240 hours of practicum with on-the-job training, offsite with potential employers. It provides you with an interactive learning experience on key topics such as compounding and dispensing prescriptions and customer care. The curriculum covers areas such as: role of the assistant, dispensing, provincial and federal legislation, pharmacology, community procedures, compounding drug distribution systems, pharmaceutical calculations and more. You will also learn computer and communication skills and come away feeling confident in your ability to provide exceptional patient care.
Upon graduation, you will be highly skilled and have the opportunity to pursue employment in retail pharmacies, public or private school boards, home healthcare or long-term care facilities, community pharmacies or within the public health service.
