The Pandemic Helped Him Start His Dream Career: Ali’s Story

The Pandemic Helped Him Start His Dream Career: Ali’s Story

2020 has been a memorable year for me as I was able to learn virtually at Anderson College. This gave me the opportunity, not only to pursue my career goals, but also to spend quality time with my family. I was a dentist for 25 years in my home country, however I wanted to experience a change in my career by learning about business when I immigrated to Canada.

During this otherwise challenging time in our history, I’ve actually been able to achieve my dream of taking the Business Administration program at Anderson College and have advanced my knowledge in many areas. 2020 has also helped me build good relationships and become closer to my wife, as well as my daughter.

The COVID-19 pandemic strongly impacted individuals’ lives this year. It negatively affected many people, as it caused self-isolation and a lack of communication. However, the pandemic positively impacted me.

“I always wanted to experience a change in my career. Therefore, I decided to learn more about accounting and business after I immigrated to Canada.”

I got into dentistry when I was 18 because my parents always wanted me to study science, even though I didn’t enjoy it very much. During the pandemic, my friend told me about a course at Anderson College, as she thought it fit my interests and skills. I always wanted to experience a change in my career. Therefore, I decided to learn more about accounting and business after I immigrated to Canada, which is why I decided to apply for this course in June. I am beyond happy with my decision!

Being in quarantine gave me time to learn about subjects of interest, and this has kept me positively focused, advancing my knowledge day-by-day. Being at home for eight months, I had the concentrated time to study and, I think, this has contributed greatly to my success.

“COVID-19 led me to study something of interest, socialize with others in my household, and reconnect with the people I hadn’t talked to in years.”

The program has taught me about communicating in English, accounting, dealing with changes, brainstorming, and computer skills, which is much more than I expected. Communicating with my classmates and teacher has helped me to feel less isolated and has allowed me to socialize with an open mind as well.

The second positive effect of the pandemic for me was that I got to spend more time with my family at home and build good relationships with my daughter and wife. We have become much closer as we have spent quality time together playing games, talking, and watching movies. It also gave me time to virtually connect with family members who I hadn’t communicated with for years. To conclude, COVID-19 led me to study something of interest, socialize with others in my household, and reconnect with the people I hadn’t talked to in years. It helped me to keep moving forward and I have hope for better days to come in 2021.

I hope this story will inspire others as it will encourage them to keep moving forward, no matter how hard the current situation is. Having a positive point of view makes life easier while we are in quarantine. It will also encourage individuals to advance their knowledge in a new profession no matter their age and it might inspire someone to try connecting with people they haven’t socialized with in years.
