Staff Fighting COVID-19 – Sasha’s Story

Staff Fighting COVID-19 – Sasha’s Story

Everything has changed – our priorities, our routines, and the way we live. While COVID-19 has separated us physically, we are more determined to stay connected with you. Whether you are combatting COVID-19 at the front line or from home.

Sasha G. is part of our staff at the Downtown campus. Here is her story:

What are your tips for online teaching and/or working from home?

I find the key to effective online teaching is clear guidance for the students. Since we can’t be face to face, I have found that incorporating interactive videos, assignments, and activities into class time helps the students to remain engaged. A large portion of our instruction for the Medical Laboratory Assistant Technician program depends on laboratory demonstrations and competencies. It is important to tie these into the theory component that we are focusing on during virtual lectures. I always try and emphasize the importance of technical competencies and describe these in conjunction with videos of the expectations for when we get to be together in the lab again. This involves a lot more preparatory work on my end, but seeing the students engaged and making the most of online learning makes it all worth it!

Share a fun moment that happened while you have been teaching and/or working from home

I really enjoy the positive feedback from my students on how they are adjusting to the new “normal”. My favourite moment is when my students tell me that they look forward to our meetings every day!

Share a kind message you would like to pass on to our students

I am so proud of how well everyone has quickly adjusted and learned the new platform. There were a few kinks at first, but by the amazing support from administration and IT we have been able to move forward with learning rather seamlessly. This just shows the caliber and dedication of the students at Anderson College. Together we have found a way to overcome adversity, and I have no doubt that we will continue to be successful on our journey together. Until we can be together again in person and in the lab, I look forward to hearing all of your voices and watching you grow throughout this process. Keep up the amazing work!

Share a message you would like to pass on to our front line workers

As a health care professional, I commend the front line and essential workers for putting their lives on hold so that we can move past this and come out even stronger. Thank you for your dedication and all that you do! You are the true heroes!
