Rubie’s Journey to a Dental Assistant Career

Rubie’s Journey to a Dental Assistant Career

It all started with a visit to Anderson. Read Rubie’s journey, written in her own words.

A visit with no regrets. It all started with a visit to Anderson College…. As I stepped foot at this college, I had goose bumps and I just knew this is where I belonged. I knew this would be the beginning of a beautiful journey that would lead me to where and who I wanted to be. The school is welcoming and so are the people. The clean pathways and classrooms were inviting me to stay.

“As I stepped foot at this college, I had goose bumps and I just knew this is where I belonged. I knew this would be the beginning of a beautiful journey”

I am an immigrant here in Canada. My mother brought me and my two siblings here 7 years ago. It’s a big change, a big adjustment. A new country, and a new beginning. I was so excited, yet overwhelmed. Where do I begin? To start, I worked as a cashier in a small Filipino-owned restaurant making minimum wage. I know I was blessed for having such a job, however, I knew I could do more and be more. The question was how? How do I do it? How do I begin? Where? I also asked myself: What is it I really want to do? Who do I want to be?
Her story reflects a common challenge faced by many newcomers and students — figuring out how to balance immediate needs with long-term goals.

What Turning Point Led Rubie to Anderson?

A confusion arose, and I could not decide. A year passed by and I met my now husband. I started a family and a clerical job in a printing company. The pay was a bit higher than minimum wage and the work wasn’t that hard. However, I still felt empty and not content. At the back of my mind, I knew there was something out there that I was destined to be.

One day I decided I needed to leave that job. I was lost. I didn’t know what to do. My husband wasn’t working full time either. There were times I was thinking what now? Then one day, while on a train going to find a job, I saw an ad saying, “Why Anderson?” and I thought yes, why not? That’s when I decided, I will do something about my life. I will step up and this school will be my stepping stone.

“Anderson College was the right place for me. It made me a better version of myself.”

As Lauren Conrad says in brainy quotes; “There is never just one thing that leads to success for anyone. I feel it’s always a combination of passion, dedication, hard work, and being in the right place at the right time.” Indeed, Anderson College was the right place for me. It made me a better version of myself and, as I am graduating now, I know life will never be the same again. The education and knowledge I garnered for the 7 months of my course is worth the wait for the right time. To Anderson College, thank you. It’s a visit I will never regret but cherish.
