Job Loss to Online Training and Logistics & Supply Chain Career Success

Job Loss to Online Training and Logistics & Supply Chain Career Success

At Anderson College, we are constantly amazed by the courage of our students, faculty, and staff. In December 2021 we ran a “My Courageous Moment” story-gathering campaign to celebrate our students, their strength, the moments that have defined their lives and the people who have motivated them to overcome and succeed.

In sharing our stories, we realize we are not alone and are often inspired to recognize, or to find, our own extraordinary courage. We hope the following story moves you, as it has our Anderson family.

I’m Criselda DeVera and am pursuing my studies in Supply Chain and Logistics. As a student I’m inspired and motivated to achieve my goals and acquire more knowledgeable skills to level up my career. Since the pandemic hit, many encountered struggles in their lives and I am one of them. I got laid off from my company. It was unexpected, and I had no idea what was going on. I didn’t know what to do; I couldn’t understand where I would go or how I could survive, especially because I am independent and had no one else to depend on.

In a situation like this, one needs to be brave and strong as well as have faith in God. I tried finding another job when I got laid off from my company, but it was not easy as most of the companies quit hiring and were either laying off or firing their employees. It was not easy to apply for a job during the pandemic, as a lot of protocols were in place which made it difficult to work during that time.

“I realized that it would be a good idea to pursue online school since I did not have a full-time job and my husband was a newcomer here in Canada.”

You never knew if you had been exposed to the COVID-19 virus from someone that you came in contact with, and there was no vaccine yet. It was so scary during those days, especially when I was outside or came in contact with anyone during my commutes on the public transit. I also tried to do an online job and started a small business just to have something to do, as these days online or social media are in-demand platforms.

I tried to have an online business, buying and selling on social media and had chats with my client encouraging them to buy my products. I also sent packages back home just to have an online selling business there too to help them as well back home. At least I kept myself busy. Then, my cousin mentioned to me about online school and approached me during the lockdown, as we had nothing else to do with almost everyone jobless and businesses being closed.

So, I realized that it would be a good idea to pursue online school since I did not have a full-time job and my husband was a newcomer here in Canada. He is one of my inspirations who motivates me to upgrade my experience. I have almost 12 year’s experience working at retail stores, so I was aware of supply chain and logistics and it seemed a perfect fit for me.

I am glad that I opted for this program to expand my knowledge and to gain more ideas which will enable me to apply for a job related to this course. With my experience, now I can change my future. I have a backup plan, just to be safe. I am really happy that I am part of Anderson College. They are helping me change my future and create a good life!

Achieve your goals and don’t give up whatever struggles come your way. Always be yourself, stay positive and faithful to God. If there’s patience, there’s a way to a good future!
