Jeanine Achieves Her “Canadian Dream” as a Medical Lab Technician

In celebration of our convocation 2023, and the opportunity for us to finally be together and celebrate in person after three years, we asked our graduates to share their Anderson College experience.

Asking, “How has Anderson College changed your life?” prompted over a hundred submissions … this is one of those extraordinary student stories.

We hope this reflection moves you, as it has our Anderson family, and inspires you to ever embrace the career and life you imagine and, truly, deserve.

Ten years ago, I would not have thought that 30-year-old me would be receiving her Canadian citizenship and graduating from Anderson College after pursuing a career as a medical lab technician, while also working full time in a hospital. People always talk about the “American dream”, and here I am, living my own version of my “Canadian dream”.

“If you were to ask me, “How did Anderson College change my life?”, the answer is simple, Anderson College helped me live out that Canadian dream.”

If you were to ask me, “How did Anderson College change my life?”, the answer is simple, Anderson College helped me live out that Canadian dream. The answer, though simple, holds more meaning than a four-hundred-word essay can express, but alas, here we go.

I pursued a career in hotel and restaurant management in the Philippines, and when I finally got to Canada, that was not the job I was looking for. I ended up working as a personal caregiver for an elderly woman up until she passed on, which is what brought me to Sunnybrook Hospital. But through Sunnybrook, I was inspired to pursue a path as a medical laboratory technician, and Anderson College helped me reach my goals.

Firstly, one of the initial classes we took was in relation to creating an effective and coherent resume. Although we weren’t getting graded for our resumes, the lesson that the instructors led at Anderson ultimately helped me create better resumes that helped me launch my career. In addition, it was not always easy balancing full-time work with full-time studies, and truthfully, there were many times I wanted to give up. However, it was through the support of the instructors and staff at Anderson that ultimately helped me push on. Often, the professors and staff would offer words of encouragement to persevere.

In retrospect, I know that it is through selecting Anderson College as my school that I was able to achieve my goals, and I would not have been able to live out my Canadian dream had I gone to another school.
