How William Found Confidence, Pride, and Purpose as a PSW
Each year, in the spirit of celebrating the diverse and powerful experiences of our students, we run a story contest. Again in 2024, the response was awe inspiring, with over 150 submissions. We asked, “How has Anderson College changed your life?” … This is one of those extraordinary student stories. We hope this reflection moves you, as it has our Anderson family, and inspires you to ever embrace the career and life you imagine and, truly, deserve. Rest assured we are here to help you navigate each step along the way to success. ____________________________________________________________________ Choosing the right career path often begins with a desire to do meaningful work and to grow into the best version of yourself. For William, that journey led him to Anderson College’s PSW program, where hands-on learning, supportive instructors, and a strong sense of community helped him build confidence, pride, and a renewed sense of purpose. His story reflects the powerful impact of education that is rooted in compassion, respect, and real-world preparation.

From Hands-On Learning to Life-Changing Work as a PSW

I chose to go to Anderson College because of its great reputation and highly respected education in the health field. I was looking for a career that would give me a hands-on education and an in-depth practical touch, and Anderson was and still is my only choice. Carolyn, our instructor, was thorough and kind, supporting every student and treating us like family. Her approach to learning involved getting us actively engaged in what personal support workers (PSWs) do in the field, and she always encouraged us with the respect and humbleness that only a wonderful person like herself could offer.

“I was looking for a career that would give me a hands-on education and an in-depth practical touch, and Anderson was and still is my only choice.”

All the staff were friendly and dependable, answering all our questions and concerns and genuinely wanting us to succeed. Anderson changed my life because it gave me the opportunity to become something bigger than myself. It not only provided me with a great education but also opened doors in the community that would normally have remained closed. I gained confidence, pride, and made many friendships that will last a lifetime. My fiancé Mindy attended Anderson over 6 years ago and inspired me to become a PSW like she is. I see and feel her love for the job and her kindness, which has inspired me to follow in her footsteps: helping others change lives and making the world a better place. So, if you ask me, yes, I had the time of my life at Anderson. William B.
