How the Medical Esthetician Program Empowered Ngoc Thanh to Lead with Confidence

At Anderson College, we’re continually inspired by the students and graduates who turn learning into leadership. Ngoc Thanh Phan (Catherine) is one such remarkable example. With nearly three decades of experience in the beauty industry, she has transformed her lifelong passion for helping others into a thriving career in medical esthetics and leadership … a powerful reminder of what’s possible when passion meets purpose.
We were honoured to sit down with her to reflect on the experiences, mentors, and moments that have shaped the professional she is today. This is her story, one that will undoubtedly inspire anyone reimagining their future or aspiring to lead with skill, confidence, and heart.
From Seasoned Expert to Leader with the Medical Esthetician Program
A Lifelong Passion for Beauty and Growth
With nearly three decades in the beauty industry and a reputation as a trusted trainer, Ngoc Thanh (Catherine) had already achieved what many dream of. Yet her desire to grow, to evolve with the changing world of esthetics, inspired her to return to the classroom; a decision that would transform her career and open doors to leadership.
During her practicum at TR• Beauty Spa Vaughan, Thanh’s performance was described by her supervisors as “exceptional” and defined by “135% dedication.” They praised her “professionalism, eagerness to learn, and leadership spirit,” qualities that quickly earned her an invitation to join the company as Training Manager and to represent the group at the prestigious Aesthetic Medicine Surgery Conference (AMSC) 2025 in Malaysia. These experiences, and her initiative to always contribute her best, led to the opportunity she thrives in today, applying her specialized skills and leadership acumen to the team at the prestigious Beauty Spa Inc.
“I’ve been in the beauty industry for 27 years, with 25 of those spent as a trainer. I’ve always loved helping others look and feel their best, and I even wrote a book called The Next Level to inspire those who want to grow in this field. But after decades of experience, I began noticing a shift – clients were becoming more interested in advanced skin care and corrective treatments rather than makeup alone. That’s when I realized it was time to elevate my own skills and step into the future of beauty through a medical esthetician program.”
Discovering Anderson College
When Thanh began exploring her options, she visited several schools, but one experience stood out. The care, time, and attention she received from an Anderson advisor left a lasting impression and solidified her choice.
“I met June from Anderson, and she really inspired me. She spent about two hours explaining everything to me and giving me clear information. I visited the campus, saw the training room and the students there, and I felt the connection. Anderson was well established, had the right criteria, and offered support.
“The downtown location was perfect, surrounded by many spas. I thought it was a wonderful environment to study and discover new opportunities. That’s why I chose Anderson College.”
Mastering the Art and Science of Esthetics
Thanh’s journey through Anderson’s medical esthetician training revealed not only her technical mastery but also her deep appreciation for mentorship and community. She speaks fondly of her instructors and the compassion they showed their students.
“I had a very good experience – they were all excellent to me. My instructor, Anahita, was very dedicated, very detailed, and highly skilled in advanced esthetics. I learned so much from her. She listened to us and had understanding. She cared for each student because adult students are totally different. We come from many countries with different cultures, backgrounds, and challenges, and she gave us that understanding. She explained everything step by step, and many times I saw her repeat it for other students. She was so patient.”
Thanh’s favourite part of the program was the advanced esthetics courses, where she learned about laser theory and practiced new techniques in the lab.
“I loved learning the theory behind lasers, and I got a lot of practice in the lab. Anahita taught us very thoroughly and very mindfully, and I could apply what I learned right away during the practicals. Her training was excellent.”
Thanh also remembers the kindness and support of the Anderson staff.
“The staff at my campus, the Delta campus, were very supportive. I really miss Afrina. She was so helpful, so kind, and so nice. One time I was very sick, and she took me to the medical clinic. She waited for me, talked to the doctor, and explained everything. She was so helpful; I miss her a lot.”
Through this combination of advanced learning and personal care, Thanh gained the confidence, professionalism, and empathy that would soon define her work.

Learning Beyond the Classroom
Anderson’s curriculum equipped Thanh with the foundation she needed, but her natural curiosity and drive to keep learning pushed her further. She embraced every opportunity to expand her skills and stay current with industry trends.
“At Anderson College, the foundational knowledge I learned was very relevant. There are many technologies and brands of laser devices in the market, and I kept attending workshops to stay updated. Anderson gave me the base I needed – infection control, client care, consultation, and professionalism – and from there I could keep building my skills.”
That curiosity and initiative soon set her apart when it came time for her practicum.
From Practicum to Professional Leadership
Thanh’s practicum at TR• Beauty Spa Vaughan was nothing short of transformative. Her supervisors described her as “exceptional,” commending her “initiative, adaptability, and strong commitment to excellence.” They noted her “knowledge, positive attitude, and team spirit” that contributed greatly to the spa’s daily operations and staff learning environment.
“For me, I’m very proactive. I visited and explored the spas around my area. I chose the one I felt most comfortable with and sent their contact to the school. The school helped me apply, and I got the right placement.
“My practicum was very good. I applied the professional conduct and infection control I learned at Anderson. I supported the staff, built relationships, and brought my positive energy. I did many things – cleaning, welcoming clients, giving consultations, bringing tea – I did whatever I could to help. The founder found me very helpful, so they chose me.”
Her leadership grew naturally out of her willingness to share her experience and uplift her peers.
“I worked with customers and received a lot of positive feedback. Because I have a background in training – over 25 years – I was able to train other estheticians in the spa. The founder saw that and discussed with me how to upgrade the service standards.
“I also performed facials, recommended skincare and home care, and guided other estheticians. Clients gave very good feedback not only for me but also for the team. The owner appreciated my contribution and asked me how to help everyone step to the next level.”
Thanh’s dedication to excellence actually led to TR• Beauty Spa offering her the role of Training Manager role and selecting her to represent the company at the Aesthetic Medicine Surgery Conference (AMSC) 2025 in Malaysia.
“This opportunity grew directly from the solid foundation I built at Anderson College and the confidence my Medical Esthetician diploma gave me to step into a leadership role.”
The opportunities didn’t stop there. Her practicum success led to the next door opening.
“A remarkable opportunity unfolded when I met the visionary founder of Ivy Beauty and Spa Inc. It was here that I was given the chance to apply the professional protocols and standards I had learned at Anderson College, seamlessly integrating them into a workplace culture that deeply values exceptional client care and technical excellence. Ivy Beauty and Spa not only prioritizes high-quality service but also empowers its team to thrive through continuous learning and shared dedication to beauty and wellness.”
Gratitude and Guidance for Future Students
Thanh’s journey is grounded in gratitude, humility, and a deep belief in giving back. Her advice to future estheticians is both practical and profound.
“I’m proud to be an Anderson graduate. My instructors and campus team believed in me, encouraged me, and gave me the tools I needed to succeed. My advice is don’t just rely on what you learn in class. Be curious. Read books. Explore the market. Try different services. Even start applying for jobs before you graduate.
“In this career, what you give from the heart always comes back multiplied. During my practicum, I didn’t expect recognition, I just wanted to help. I cleaned, I carried the hot stones for massage, I supported everyone like they were my family. That care and teamwork opened so many doors for me.”
Through Anderson’s medical esthetics courses, Thanh not only gained professional expertise but also rediscovered her purpose, helping others feel beautiful, confident, and cared for.
Continuing the Journey
Today, Thanh’s professional path continues to expand, as she mentors others and represents excellence in leadership.
“Today, I proudly mentor other estheticians and help them reach their potential. I am thrilled to be honing my skills and expanding my contribution to the industry in my Brand Manager role at Ivy Beauty and Spa Inc. Education doesn’t end when you graduate, it’s a lifelong adventure.
“Success isn’t measured by titles or recognition, but by the love and respect you build with those around you, and the difference you make in people’s lives. That’s the true beauty of this profession.
“I consider myself truly fortunate and deeply grateful to Anderson College for being such a transformative part of my journey.”
