Fulfilling a Teenage Dream to Become a Police Officer – Geoffrey’s story

Fulfilling a Teenage Dream to Become a Police Officer – Geoffrey’s story

At Anderson College, we are constantly amazed by the courage of our students, faculty, and staff. In December 2021 we ran a “My Courageous Moment” story-gathering campaign to celebrate our students, their strength, the moments that have defined their lives and the people who have motivated them to overcome and succeed.

In sharing our stories, we realize we are not alone and are often inspired to recognize, or to find, our own extraordinary courage. We hope the following story moves you, as it has our Anderson family.

In 2014 I was driving in downtown Hamilton when a car drove by at high rates of speed. I began to chase the speeding vehicle, called 911 and continued to follow the car while I was on the phone with the 911 operator. I requested authorization to continue the highspeed pursuit as they checked with the supervising officer.

“It seems to have always been in my nature to enforce the law, which is why I am pursuing the Police Foundations program here at Anderson College.”

Since they had no available units in the area, they granted me temporary permission to pursue the vehicle until units became available. I tracked the vehicle and pursued it for almost an hour until officers were able to take over the chase.

They also had units set up at the suspect’s house as I was able to give the license plate information along with the car’s make and model. I have a sister at the Hamilton Wentworth police and on many occasions I’ve helped out, including assisting in two arrests of DUI suspects, multiple vehicle pursuits as well as in other situations.

It seems to have always been in my nature to enforce the law, which is why I am pursuing the Police Foundations program at Anderson College. I’m thrilled to know that I am going to be able to fulfil the dream that I have had since I was a teenager.

“You are never too old to accomplish the things that you’ve set your mind and heart to.”

To anyone who thinks they are too old to accomplish any dream of theirs, do not ever think that way. I am 36 years old and pursuing the dream that I had when I was 18 years old. Age is just a number. You are never too old to accomplish the things that you’ve set your mind and heart to.

There’s always time to do something for yourself and for everyone else around you. I am never afraid to step in and assist in any way that I can, it does not matter how dangerous the situation is. I always choose to do the right thing. You should too. So again, never be afraid to achieve your goals. Life is too short for regrets; always look towards the future.

Follow your heart, that is where the purest inspiration will come from. Your mind is easily swayed and convinced of things, but the heart is pure.
