In celebration of our convocation 2023, and the opportunity for us to finally be together and celebrate in person after three years, we asked our graduates to share their Anderson College experience.
Asking, “How has Anderson College changed your life?” prompted over a hundred submissions … this is one of those extraordinary student stories.
We hope this reflection moves you, as it has our Anderson family, and inspires you to ever embrace the career and life you imagine and, truly, deserve.

Why Did I Decide to Change My Career and Become a PSW?
In 2017, my partner and I decided to move to Canada in search of a better life and to live freely and express ourselves in this country. The journey was tough, but it was worth it in the end. The resettlement process was challenging, and as a professional makeup artist, I found it difficult to secure makeup jobs in Toronto. I had to work as a concierge for over three years, but I always knew that I wanted more and that I wanted to offer more to my community.
“Anderson College provided me with the platform to launch my career, and now I work as a PSW at Lakeridge Health with a better income and a better life.”
I decided to search for something that would give me an opportunity to have a better income. My family and friends encouraged me to become a personal support worker (PSW), since I care so much about helping people and giving back to my community.
How Did I Choose Anderson College for My Personal Support Worker Course?
I started researching schools that could help me become a PSW and found Anderson College online. I reached out to them, and everyone from Judith, Jesus and Ruth to Miss Barbra, who was my teacher, were very helpful every step of the way until my program was completed.
“Working as a PSW inspired me to become a registered practical nurse, and I have already started the process.”
How Did Becoming a PSW Change My Life and Career?
Anderson College provided me with the platform to launch my career, and now I work as a PSW at Lakeridge Health with a better income and a better life. Moreover, I am set to marry my best friend of over 10 years.
Working as a PSW inspired me to become a registered practical nurse, and I have already started the process. All of this happened because Anderson provided me with an enabling environment and taught me to believe in myself. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Anderson College and my partner, who supported me every step of the way and has been my support system from the start. Anderson College has forever changed my life.
