From Loss of a Mother to Birth of a New Baby & New Beginnings at Anderson

From Loss of a Mother to Birth of a New Baby & New Beginnings at Anderson

As we all have, Anderson College students have faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In an attempt to focus on the triumphs and celebrate the courage and tenacity of our community, we launched a My2020 Story Campaign. Students were asked a few poignant questions to spark the sharing of their experiences and insights. The response was overwhelming and, in the process, we have been blown away by their authentic sharing and inspired by the powerful lessons they have learned. We are grateful to all those who contributed and are richer for having you in our Anderson family.

Here is one such story, for you …

My Journey to Anderson College

I accomplished all my goals and am in school just as my mother wished. I also had a healthy baby boy, and he is growing beautifully. Being a student at Anderson College in 2020 truly helped me to keep my dreams and hopes afloat during the troubled times we faced. For this and for what’s come as a result, I am incredibly grateful.

I had been feeling gloomy for a while due to an accident. I also knew that living from pay cheque to pay cheque, moving from agency to agency, wasn’t going to work in the long run for a single-parent family. So, in 2019 I decided I needed a new career quick! This started my journey at Anderson College.

Choosing Dental Assisting as a New Career Path

Anderson was so supportive, the program was short and condensed, so I signed up. I found out I was pregnant midway through the course. I was excited to have another baby but at the same time wanted to continue and finish my schooling.
“Anderson supported me and gave me hope for the future; they checked up on me, sent emails and made sure I had the support to come back when I was ready … Thank you Anderson for not giving up on me.”

Things were great until my mom got sick. Thank God for the CPR course I learned; it was really helpful! My mom told me she didn’t have that long to live, so I explained the situation to the faculty. While they were excited for me about the baby, they told me that life wouldn’t always work as I’d planned, and they suggested that I come back after the baby was born.

My mom fought but unfortunately passed away on December 3rd, 2020. My life was shattered. She was so supportive of my decision to choose Anderson College. I never thought my mom would pass. Anderson supported me and gave me hope for the future; they checked up on me, sent emails and made sure I had the support to come back when I was ready … Thank you Anderson for not giving up on me. You gave me hope and purpose. I could have gone to any school but because of the love I felt at Anderson, I came back motivated and prepared! Anderson has given me and my family the gift of hope for the future.

Why I Recommend Anderson College’s Dental Assisting Program

“I am hoping I can inspire all who think they are too old or too busy to pursue a new career. Education is the key to success, and this dream and journey can be accomplished by anyone.”
I turned 35 in 2020. I have 3 kids and am a single mother. I want to inspire others and pass the gift of education and selflove to anyone else who feels helpless, wants to break the cycle of depression, and set goals to overcome obstacles that arise. Anderson College and the faculty have taught me and given me hope of a prosperous life after COVID. Thank you for believing in me, checking up on me and offering loads of advice and strategies to cope with my busy and compact schedule. As my journey continued, my classmates and the faculty were extremely helpful, and I am grateful to have had all this support along my journey. I feel like if I can do it everyone can and am truly happy to be continuing my educational journey and beginning a new life.

I am hoping I can inspire all who think they are too old or too busy to pursue a new career. Education is the key to success, and this dream and journey can be accomplished by anyone.
