Finding Happiness in Healthcare: AnnaLiza’s Journey

Finding Happiness in Healthcare: AnnaLiza’s Journey

As we all have, Anderson College students have faced unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In an attempt to focus on the triumphs and celebrate the courage and tenacity of our community, we launched a My2020 Story Campaign. Students were asked a few poignant questions to spark the sharing of their experiences and insights. The response was overwhelming, and in the process, we have been blown away by their authentic sharing and inspired by the powerful lessons they have learned. We are grateful to all those who contributed and are richer for having you in our Anderson family.

Here is one such story, for you …

2020 is a memorable year for me, because this year I finally decided to go back to school. After years and months of procrastinating, deciding what program to take, and which school or college to go to, I came to realize in August 2020, that it was time for me to do something and choose a career that is actually close to my heart, the medical field.

“After years of working in other professions, I wasn’t content or happy, or feeling successful. My mind would always be on the healthcare profession.”

Before 2020, I had been thinking of which career would be best suited for me. I had a medical background already, having graduated Nursing in the Philippines before coming to Canada 21 years ago. But, I did not pursue or have a desire to upgrade my Nursing degree and become an RN. Perhaps, because I was young and wanted to see if there was something else that was more exciting for me to do. I remember at that time, people would tell me: you are young, there are lots of opportunities for you, and you’re in Canada, so you can explore more options if you want to! However, after years of working in other professions, I wasn’t content or happy, or feeling successful. My mind would always be on the healthcare profession.

As 2020 started, before the lockdown happened in March, I went to an event where the former Mayor of Mississauga, Hazel McCallion, spoke about living our lives with purpose. She specifically mentioned about education and learning, that we have to keep going, that age doesn’t matter, and we have to continue to educate ourselves and others. Those words stayed with me after her speech.

“I am truly grateful that after much thought, I chose to attend Anderson College. The Admissions team was so helpful and supportive.”

I had thought that part of the reason I lost interest in pursuing studies was because of my age and my fear that I wouldn’t be able to cope with being a student again. However, I am truly grateful that after much thought, I chose to attend Anderson College. The Admissions team was so helpful and supportive. Compared to other schools that I reached out to about the Medical Laboratory Technician program, Anderson College has one of the best ratios for student success.

I chose the above story, because it will inspire others to let go of their doubts and fears. Never wait for the right time to do something that you can do now. And most importantly, we are in this world to help others, make it a better place, and leave it knowing that we did our part as good and decent human beings, for ourselves and others!
