7 Tips to Empower You to Excel in a Law Enforcement Career

7 Tips to Empower You to Excel in a Law Enforcement Career

If you have a propensity to protect and empower others, to make a difference in your community, you’re likely geared for a career directly related to serving others. If you’ve thought about taking a police foundations course or law enforcement program, you’ve undoubtedly considered what can give you the competitive edge and help you sustain your career over years.

As you can imagine, protecting others means caring for self, living by example, and upholding the values required for harmony, personally and professionally. It’s a tall order to choose a career in the ‘hero’ business, but the world needs people just like you. And so, we need to ensure you are prepared and aware of what it takes to thrive in this profession over time.

These insights will do just that.

7 Tips to Empower You to Excel in a Law Enforcement Career

1. Know & Remember Your “Why”

You have to have a solid reason why you’re in this business – not only will it sustain you during the stress of studying during your law enforcement courses, but throughout your career. Whether that be to make a difference, to support your family, to bring justice to the world, to protect and serve those in your community, you have to keep a keen eye on your “why”.

2. Up the Ante on Perpetual Learning

Technology and all manner of evolution in the industry needs to be recognized and embraced. To maintain the leading edge in your career you need to be at pace and even ahead of the learning curve. Keep abreast of the latest advancements in police practices, policies and procedures, and developments and shifts in the law.

3. Show Compassion for Others and Self

In this role you are a pillar within the community and must deal with a diverse range of people and a variety of often extremely challenging situations. This requires courage and strength of character, but those who serve, above all, with compassion are able to build the most trust with community members. While this way of embracing your daily duties is commendable, you must also recognize the level of consistent stress you’ll be under and learn to recognize your own fatigue and take breaks to maintain your own physical and mental health. This will ensure you can thrive in your career in the short and the long run.

4. Know and Adhere to Your Values, with Integrity

As a law enforcement professional you are, by nature, held to the highest standards. Embrace that truth and have an in-depth understanding of the values you hold and build a reputation as one who leads by example and always follows through on what you say you will do. This will go a long way in propelling your career to new and higher levels, and to forever maintaining respect in the workplace and in your community.

5. Safeguard Your Reputation

Taking tip #4, one step further, in a world where all acts have the potential to be recorded and shared, you must imagine in all situations that you could be observed. Do what you know you would be proud of were your actions to become public. You must think before responding, apply those core values to all situations and be well rested and grounded enough to be able to do so without question.

6. Embrace a Balanced Life

To do your job well, you must have a fulfilling life outside of your job. Having friends and loved ones who enrich your personal life will give you perspective in your professional life. A law enforcement career can be all consuming, so taking your weekends and planning events, connections and activities that allow you to relax and experience joy, will go a long way to empowering you to thrive in your career for years to come.

7. Take Everything in Stride and Stay Steady

As with any job there will be politics, conflicts, co-workers who may rub you the wrong way, and those you apprehend who will vex you, so you need to remember that nothing is personal. You must let things go, learn the lessons that will serve you and leave the rest. And in all of this, you must remain steadfast, finding and creating positive experiences on the job and off. If you can do this, there is no limit to where you can take your career and the difference you can make in the lives of others.

A successful career in criminal justice is a worthy goal many aspire to, but not all achieve. Applying these tips as you face each day, working hard and being resilient as you learn and evolve will go a long way to ensuring that you excel in this rewarding, purposeful career.
