Aligning interests with a growing industry and finding a position that will not only give you stability and options but joy and an opportunity to stretch and grow, are not tasks you want to take lightly … and perhaps guidance from those who welcome and support thousands of students as they make these essential decisions, we thought, may offer you some insight.
With over 30 Anderson College programs to select from, any new student has their work cutout for them navigating the options and narrowing the choices down. We’re here to help.
7 Tips to Choosing the Right College Program for Your Skyrocketing Future
You may not be aware but private colleges in Ontario, and across the country, offer fast-track education options for those looking to become skilled and to launch careers quickly. At Anderson, our team works tirelessly to make sure that the programs we offer match market demand, ensuring you’re not only receiving a high-quality education but are in demand when you graduate. Many of our offerings are accredited and all of them strive to meet the most rigorous standards, blending theoretical and practical training, and are delivered by experts in their respective industries.
Now all you need to do is determine what you love, what inspires you and where you want to channel your efforts. Program selection is key and here’s how to navigate it with success for a skyrocketing future (notice we didn’t say mediocre, but skyrocketing). That’s the goal, empowering you to reach for the stars. These tips will get you launched.
1. Take Time to Self Reflect
This decision is an essential one. You don’t want it influenced by others, by expectations, or a feeling of urgency to simply choose something quickly. Take the time you need to consider the following:
- What do you love to do?
- What skills do you already have? (Think transferable skills that you’ve gained from the various jobs or volunteering experiences you’ve had through the years.)
- What can you see yourself doing in 5 years, in 20 years? Perhaps the job is still fuzzy, but what about an industry that you feel you may enjoy working in?
- Do you want to help others? Are you tech savvy? Do you want to work directly with people or behind the scenes? What do you really value in a job, working with a team, autonomy, upward mobility, financial security, flexible hours, shift work or set schedule?
- With these answers in hand, now you can move through the next tips with a better understanding of who you are and what you want in the short and long run.
2. Align Passion with Skillset
Now you have a better idea of what you enjoy doing, where do you think you could apply those skills, within what kind of industry, what kind of job? Is it in healthcare? Technology? Business? Law or legal services? Accounting? Video and film production? If you need a little support in figuring this out, you can always take our Career Discovery Quiz, this will help you dive into to considering what your interests are and how they can align with various program options.
3. Research Profession and Professionals
Once you’ve taken a look at the various industries we cover and the Anderson College program options that can catapult you to success in any number of positions, now you want to expand your research. Take a look at professionals on LinkedIn who have those positions. What are the companies they work for? What companies, organizations or healthcare facilities employ people in the industries you’re interested in? Google search organizations and professionals; look at reviews.
4. Narrow the Options
Now you want to make a shortlist of positions and companies, so that you are narrowing down your search and ideas. Don’t worry about how it will all work out, know that this part of the process is essential, and you will figure it all out in time. Once you’ve done your due diligence, dream a little, try these careers on for size in your mind. Begin imaging yourself landing a job in that ideal position. Your thought about something always precedes your ability to achieve it. So, visualize, visualize, visualize.
5. Consider Location, Location, Location
The where of your program is just as essential as the what. Your ability to get to school or live within a reasonable distance will often dictate a portion of your program selection decision. At Anderson we offer college courses in Toronto and in the surrounding areas in Ontario. With 10 locations to choose from, you will surely be able to find one that fits your needs. Review the programs and their respective locations and then you can make an informed decision on this point.
6. Review Alumni Experiences
Although we may be infinitely proud of what we offer at Anderson, no one can say it better or give you better insight than our students and graduates. We want to make sure you get a personal view of what attending Anderson College feels like and gain an understanding of what it can mean for your career, your future.
