4 Tips for Handling Back-to-school Jitters

By August 22, 2018 March 4th, 2020 No Comments

The first day of school can come with nervousness, anxiety, and stress—especially for those who have been out of school for a while. Students aiming to pursue a change in career or looking to improve their skills to progress in their current industry are determined to succeed in higher education, but may feel hesitant due to past experiences of difficult classes and cluttered schedules.

Before taking the next step in your educational career, consider these four ways to calm your nerves before your studies begin.

1. Walk Around Campus to Get Familiar With Your Surroundings

Before entering the next chapter of your life, take a moment to walk around campus and clear your mind of clutter. Even a short walk can be a quick stress-buster, helping to clear your mind and put things in perspective.

Search for different paths or routes for future strolls. You can also familiarize yourself with facilities, and check where your classrooms are. This will help you easily find your way once classes begin. It can also help you feel familiar with the campus environment, helping to ease nerves as you begin your studies.

2. Practice Mind and Body Relaxation Techniques

Positive thinking and deep breathing provide a pair of techniques that improve physical and mental wellbeing. In moments where students may feel stressed or anxious with thoughts regarding their future or present classes, positive thinking can help to soothe nerves and ease worries. Research has shown how positivity is linked with improved feelings of happiness and reduced feelings of distress.

Much like positive thinking, deep breathing patterns have become one of the quickest ways to get relief in stressful situations. Whether it’s the beginning of your program or in between accounting courses, perform a deep breathing exercise to keep your mind focused. This helps reduce stress levels while increasing the flow of oxygen to the brain.

3. Don’t Forget to Get a Good Night’s Sleep!

While sleeping might sound like a luxury reserved for those who aren’t working and studying at the same time, it’s important to get enough shut eye each night. Proper sleep helps students feel refreshed and ready for the day ahead.

In addition, research has shown that students who develop consistent sleeping patterns feel sharper, less irritable, and don’t struggle getting through the day. This can be especially important for those in accounting training, as equations and tiny details need plenty of attention from alert minds. Lack of sleep is also associated with higher levels of stress hormones, so when beginning your studies, make sure to keep a healthy sleep schedule.

4. Talk to Someone within Your Accounting Training Program

Supportive colleges work hard to create welcoming environments. This helps students feel comfortable and encouraged as they begin their studies. It also makes it easier for them to connect with instructors and classmates, which can be a wonderful resource to turn to during accounting training.

Going back to school later in life might feel isolating for some. Fortunately, many other students are also going through the same thing. Trading tips or simply venting on a stressful day can be a wonderful reminder that you’re not in this alone. It’s more than possible for you to achieve your goals, and you can get there with the help and support of those around you.
